hi guys...

my current system is as follows...

MSI 815E M/B
P3-733-EB

PC-133 memory - 128MB x 3
ATI Radeon PCI video card
Intel 10/100 nic
3-com PCI modem
Fujitsu 20G hard drive
Iomega CD-RW

i am trying to do some video editing...

so, i would like to beef up the processor to a P4 2-ghz or higher...

BUT, i would like to be able to use as many of the above parts as possible....

i know i will need a new m/b and new cpu (obviously)..

BUT, i would also like to use the memory, and all other parts....

are there P4 motherboards which can handle PC100 or PC133 memory?....

if so, please recommend...

else, what would you guys suggest i purchase...

thanks in advance....

for video editing you want faster memory than PC133 get DDR to save some money I'd say. You also need a bigger and faster HD to hold all those video files. I'd also get a firewire card or a mobo with it built in for DV editing.

You can keep everything but the RAm CPU and HD as the Radeon PCI is fine for most applications unless you want to go for a 8500AIW or something like that with lots of features like video capture etc. The Intel Nic is good and the Modem is not a bad brand. The CDRW will probably last a while for you too.

The 3 most important things in a video editing box is memory bandwidth, CPU power, and a fast + large HD

how about the memory...

i guess i am not too familiar with al the new memory types... any suggestion on memory type and amount?...

thx for your advice in advance...

If you're going for AMD, then the PC133 RAM won't hurt as badly as with a P4. The latter are VERY dependant on fast RAM, the former not so.

For either platform, there are a handful of mainboards that have both SDR and DDR RAM slots, so you can later migrate if you want to. You won't find more than two SDR slots on those though.

The usual suspect for AMD is ECS K7S5A, which is old (and well matured!) but still not mentionably slower than the newer offerings. (What it doesn't have is USB 2.0.) Keep the VGA card, drives, RAM. Get a new case with a STRONG power supply unit, CPU, fan/heatsink. Keep the modem and NIC if you please, although the ECS board's onboard NIC works well - and it sometimes comes with a well working AMR modem card too, saving two precious PCI slots, and saving PCI bandwidth too which is important with your PCI VGA there.

ASUS A7A266(get the -E if you can) has three 168pin SDR and two 184pin DDR slots. I'm using an XP1800 in an early revision one.

thanks guys...

you are all seeming to recommend the AMD cpu...

any reason why the P4 is not being recommended?

is the AMD cpu and mb cheaper?.. how about reliability between P4 and AMD?...

thx again....

Reliability is in whether you build it correctly. AMD solutions give you more bang for the buck, and as I said further above, the Athlon doesn't mind slow RAM as much as the P4 does.
