MB/ mem compat?

Anyone ever use this memory in a Asus A7v8x mobo?
CORSAIR MEMORY XMS Extreme Memory Speed Series 512MB 64MX64 PC-3200C2PT With Platinum - Silver Heat Spreader OEM
Specifications:
Speed 400 MHz
Organization 64M x 64
CAS Latency 2-3-3-6-T1
Memory type DDR

Asus website:
Memory 3 x DDR DIMM Sockets
Max. 3 GB unbuffered *PC3200 /PC2700/PC2100/PC1600 non-ECC SDRAM Memory
(Note: PC3200 Max. to 2 banks only; PC2700 Max. to 4 banks only)

you will most likely need to ease up on the settings in order to run properly @ 400. The key to best performance lies in running the memory SYNCHRONOUSLY with your processor's FSB. Otherwise, the chipset on that board will cause your performance to slow to the point where you think you are running PC2100 (DDR266)

Corsiar's forum quote:
Well welcome to the forum,
The issue that you are refering to is a chipset linitation and Both AMD and NVIDIA suggest to run the memory in sync with the CPU. But in your case the best performance can be had with the memory Freq at 166 FSB and the Cass setting of Cass 2-2-2-5
In oder to run at DDR 400 you would need Rev 2 of the MB and CPU that would run at 400FSB. other wise runnig the memory at DDR 400 and the CPU at 133 or 166FSB will cause a bottle neck in the chipset and as you have found the performance is about like PC-2100 memory.

Ok lets see, i am running only a AMD 1800 polo. at stock speed, its a 266 cpu. Ill be upgrading cpu eventually but not for quite awhile, so..... being mem is last thing i need to buy, what would you suggest in laymans terms? i know some about it, but getting very confused when it comes to OC mem vs slower mem taking into account my cpu, etc. I have a borrowed stick of Elixr (sp) 2700-256 in it now running at 333

I had ordered a samsug ddr400/512 (model of ddrAsus recomemded)from a guy on Ebay but it was a total scam, Ebay refunded my money, well most of it anyway.

Any help with settings, type, etc will be greatly appreciated

Lets see if i can clairify what i am after, with my locked 1800 cpu, a MB capable of ddr400, i guess i am looking for the most compatable memory that will be "best" later on when i upgrade cpu, without causing to big a bottle neck now, if that makes any sense, works ok now, works great later on.

I am not strickly after OC memory,ddr400,if 2700 would work in this respect and be "better" than i may consider it too. but i am not ruling out Oc/400 or OC/2700 either, i guess to me stability is No.1 followed by performance, followed by future upgrade compatability with other cpu's

I now have a 1800 cpu, 256 meg 2700 mem, 7200 rpm HD, Asus A7v8x MB, Antec 400 watt PSU, Radeon 9000/128- XP pro
My computer before this was a AMd slot A, pc133 mem ,5400 HD, old Abit MB, Voodoo 5500, Win98se

SO i already have quite a increase in "felt" speed, but the memory i have isnt enough, only 256. and its borrowed so i have to give it back when i buy a stick of 512.
And i read this and that and decide on a certain memory, then i read a bad review on it,or a non compatable review, then this mem sounds good, and then it doesnt. And so on....I am new to DDR of any type, new to any MB thats not already a couple years old too.
Memory timings are greek, well i understand how to set them, but thats about it. Then there is sync and non sync, ecc and non ecc, just enough crap to make a novice have no clue on what to buy.Add that to what Asus recomends which i am sure isnt a tenth of what would work in it.And i end up each time i search for mem, totally undecided.
That is why i asked here, and asked about my mobo specificly. So if anyone can help, im listening, other answers to my post were appreciated, but still a bit confusing.(to me)

simple way:

run the memory you mentioned at whatever speed the motherboard defaults to, but manually set the timings listed if you have problems. the "more info" link above will give you more info if you want it.
