The Gigabyte mb, GA-MA790XT-UD4P, I purchased from Newegg, was DOA. When the replacement comes can I try it outside the computer case (i.e. w/o being grounded) first before installing it?

Also, is there a way to know if the problem is the mb or the cpu other than beeping? I had to use a speaker from a late 1990's case, so I'm not sure if it works or if the wiring of the connector will work in today's cases (which should have speakers!!)

You should be able to test it sitting on the MB box or if you have any laying around those nylon MB standoffs work great also. The power supply should take care of the grounding of the board for you.

Hmm...I'd say if this one boots up OK it was the MB. If it doesn't boot then it could be the CPU. Other than trying the board with another CPU and visa versa not much troubleshoooting options are available.
