MB/CPU/Memory swap...how difficult is it?

Hello all. Say a person just wanted to swap out the above mentioned components and keep there drives, p/s, etc. What kind of configuration nightmares is he looking at? Also, how likely will Windows XP be non-functional once the system tries to boot? For specific system info, he has two hard drives, NOT in a RAID configuration, along with a DVD-drive and CD/RW drive. He wants to swap out his Soyo DRAGON+ 266A m/b, Athlon XP1800 and 512 of DDR2100 RAM with a new AMD Athlon64 setup.

Any thoughts on this would be great.

It won't be too hard, but I'd backup critical data and other things he might want saved and format the drive with XP because I'd all but guarantee it won't work.

If it won't activate then just call MS and tell them about the hardware upgrade. They're supposed to be very lenient with any activation problems. I think you're supposed to be able to activate the same copy every 45 days for this reason.

Back up the data. He's going to have to reformat the PC because the chipset and boards are going to be very different.

yeah i'd agree with it to...backup all the important data b/c people just don't like doing stuff like that in general and it makes you do it
reformat and new install....

so i guess my rational for a reformat would be because it would force him to backup ^_^
