Hi, I am way out of the loop of whats going on in the hardware world, My wife has a old socket 939 amd 1.7 ghz and i want to upgrade here to the most recent i can for around $100 for cpu and motherboard, i know i need to stick with amd as Intel prices would put me way over budget. the motherboard she has now has the older form for video card not Pci express so the mb needs to go, anyone that knows best bang for the buck please let me know, , Thanks in advance P:s i have a couple pci e video card laying around so no need to buy that and also have 2 or 3 Gb of DDR2 ram laying around.

If you don't live near Fry's, check newegg's combo specials for am2; sometimes they have some for around $100, or you can get an open box board and order the backplate from the manufacturer.

I would spend a few $$ more and go for the following:

open box ip35 e ~ $60 if you can find it ( I looked for 2 weeks )

e2160 for $68 http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16819116036

that's the same price as the fry's combo and might take longer to get, but you have the huge advantage of a good mobo with that. you'll be able to get a great oc out of the e2160/ip35e combo without needing a phd in overclocking, plus you'll be able to drop in a cheap 45nm quad or q6600 in a couple years if/when you start feeling slow again.

Check out the deal for $33 for a 775dual-VSTA mobo in the hot deals forum, and then slap a $60 E2160 or E2180 in it (from Microcenter).

That mobo will take your old RAM and your old video card.
