Well with all these build threads I guess its that time of the season to build another one! my white WRX is done and gone. and my MKII MR2 is not at a point I can give it the attention and FULL Restoration it deserves. so much like a lot of people here we all just browse Craigslist looking for whatever. and I happened upon this little gem!

Who can say no to a deal like that! so I made a late night call 9pm on a Saturday. and made an appointment to go look at it early sunday morning before anyone else could jump on this deal. and after quite a nervous evening. sunday morning came after a quick crawl around the car, giving asking price and help from 4 guys. I had it loaded on the trailer!

And that is currently where the car sits attached to my truck still on the trailer. now anyone who has priced out anything for these cars know they are not cheap AT ALL. but at such a low purchase price I figured It was worth the risk. but a quick check of Car-part.com gave me the price range of 2300-3300 with a range of miles from 55-140k. all without turbo which didn't set well with me. with a unknown of how the motor blowing I didn't want the turbo and oil accessories to be full of shavings and take the new motor out. so I didn't want to have to pay 3k for a 55k motor and then another 300 for the turbo and they all wanted a 300 core. the price was just to damn high! so that led me to find a more interesting route.

Of late how I have been affording toys is buying and flipping salvage cars. so I went to copart.com and decided to see what cars where around hoping I could find a Speed6 or at very least a speed 3 which shares the same motor. and lo and behold I find an 08 speed 6 with 27k on it!

And of course the diamond in the lump of coal!

Auction for the car was yesterday so while on my lunch break on my phone I watched the auction. the internet is an amazing thing. and I managed to win the car for $1900. going to pick the car up Friday. will learn this weekend if I made a 2000 dollar mistake but if I have a running car I will have saved a lot of money and have quite a but of stuff to sell off to help offset the cost of the entire project! that's all for now but I will be in and out updating and checking everything out! ATG is flush with build threads and I love it!

Pretty awesome project, will you be keeping it after the engine swap?

Cool project! However, that black 3 doesn't look like a mazdaspeed version to me? Kind of confused since you mentioned finding another speed 6, but the black car is a 3

Typo- it's a Speed3, which shares a motor with the Speed6.

Having spent several years hearing about how bad these cars are (as well as the common fixes) I'm curios to hear how this project turns out.

Being a 2006 Mazda6 owner, I do have a soft spot for these cars

I like the Speed6 but man, that's a whole lot of risk you took on.

How do you know if the tranny works...or other damage.....

Clearly the car has been abused.

Keep us posted though, cool project.

This is a really cool project! You're in, what a little over $3K? You should be able to sell the working car for $4K-$5K, plus anything else you can sell for parts from the 3 you bought. Not exactly huge profit, but I'm guessing the fun is in the journey and this will be a fun car once you get it running.

He can get a lot more than that!

I am excited to tear into this guy, especially since I got dibs on the seats... I've always wanted to put MS3 seats in my Miata...

There are a number of known issues with the MS6, but it's not the 'one year orphan' that it appears from what I understand. It shares its engine with the MS3 and CX7, and some(?) (all?) driveline components with the CX7.

It'll be a neat, and relatively rare, car when its done. Plus the true red color is amazing.
