so my mom got a 2015 mazda3 hatch a month ago, i finally drove it while taking her to a family gettogether and noticed the nav system had no maps while messing with the clock settings.

there is a SD flash card slot in the console where i can enter map data downloaded from the mazda website. but the manual says i need to get a sd card from the dealer.

Is this just so they can overcharge me for a sd card? or can i just use any old card and put the download on it myself?

Have you looked at the web site to see if they have the data?

However, NutBucket's answer is better; and go with a SD card just in case

the instruction manual lists where to go on the website for map updates. i've already downloaded it onto hard drive.

basically mazda and the dealers are letting people DIY on maps so that they dont have to deal with it. also it allows people do update on their own schedule.

the question is whether there is some special metatag/boot sector/content protection on the 'dealer' provided sd card and the car wont recognize any generic sd card.

in this case there is a nav/gps on my mom's 3 and it seems like the dealer didnt bother or dont bother putting in the map data the first time. all the software was in blank virginal factory state.

So why don't you go back to the dealer and make them fix it?

if all they are going to do is download the same file i've already downloaded and stick it on a generic sd card, then it isnt worth the time or bother if i was going to do the same thing.

assuming there are other map updates i'm not running back to the dealer each time, so doing it myself the first time is not worth complaining about. i dislike dealers in general, that the less time spent dealing with them the better.

Does the map files work for you? Would you be able to share the files and let me know where to download them?

Thanks a lot.
