Mazda Sky-D engine

This engine diesel engine is really sounding great. I really hope Mazda comes through on their promise to bring this to the states.

I've also read elsewhere that it will be mated to both their new automatic and their manual (at least elsewhere). Hopefully both will be an option in the states. A Mazda 3 with this engine would be fantastic. I particularly like how they compared the response of the engine to a gas engine with a free revving nature.

yeah, but think of 40 mpg from a mazda3 (with the gas engine). However, that diesel could potentially do something like 60+ mpg in a car the 3 and who knows how much in a 2. Now, we just have to get this diesel stigma away from the US.

Part of the problem is diesel availability and prices, which are arbitrary due to gov't interference. Passing 7-11 at Park / Hebron here in DFW a while ago, one of the only stations in the area that even carries diesel :

87 : 2.97
93 : 3.17
Diesel : 3.55

🙁

Unless that diesel tech is a ton better than VW's, 60mpg isn't gonna happen with a car the size of the 3. The US EPA fuel economy standards are tougher than Euro, and the oft-quoted imperial mpg stats for Euro diesels don't translate perfectly. Remember the recent showdown where the Prius was a lot more efficient than the VW diesel in mixed use.
