mazda rev it up

Mazda held an autocross competition in Alameda. $40 you get to drive the snot out of a Mazda3 plus instructional courses. Also had a driving course where you could lap around in an RX-8, turbo mazdaspeed miata, 6, 3's, and an MPV! (movie of my buddy lapping around in a minivan)

I got a 32.418 lap time, the "perfect" lap time was 26.856. (My buddy got 4th place (28.592 sec) overall out of like 1000+ competitors).

I suggest you guys go check it out! SF was the first location, sign up!

edit: I placed 609 for my location (out of 2,000 people).. pretty good for my first time autoxing!

i hope you had fun..

I was to go, but I am sick so i couldnt drive from Sac to SF for it.. otherwise i would have so been there.

I was so looking forward to petting my skills against another in controlled enviorment (paramedics and no walls and other cars).

Its all autos... for a 'level playing field'... :D

Ah...what a shame. I'd be there in a second if they had any MT rides.

Autocrossing is a 2nd gear sport. They have manu-matics in there, you only need 1st gear for the start. After that you stay in second the whole course (even the pro driver did this).

They do have manuals but like I said the line to drive 'em was 1-2 hours long.

edit: wait a minute, I didn't say it was 1-2 hours to drive 'em :) The RX-8 was a mnaul and so was the turbo miata, but the line was horrendously long! :(

is it worth the $40 to compete?? do they really instruct you well??
or is test driving the manual RX8 and turbo miata the highlight of that event?

the competition is the highlight of the event, you get thrown on to a real autox track and get timed. It's pretty awesome if you've never autox'd in your life (like me :)). I thought $40 was worth it. It pays for 2 runs on the competition track, a chalk talk (basically telling you safety stuff), and 8 runs on 3 different tracks to teach you some basics of car control.

As for the instruction, you get the chalk talk and you get to talk to professional drivers while you wait in line to do your 8 runs on the 3 different tracks. There's no real instructing as in you don't sit in a classroom nor do they sit with your and while you drive.

I didn't even get to drive the rx-8 or turbo miata because the line to do it was like 1 1/2 hours long. :(

I saw this once on a driveby when I went to volunteer to man the kiddie rides at Gilette stadium with my school.

That's all I have to say.
