mazdas look hot but man their reliability + rust
Rust? Of course, this is a Mazda. They treat the metal at the factory with advanced oxidizers and mix salt right in with the molten metal.sensors located in the steering pump become contaminated with rust
So that nice heavy steering in those Mazda 3s I drove might have been power steering loss? hehehe
I have a friend with an 06 or maybe 07 Mazda 6 and has no rust so far (driven in Canada), but my 04 Van has developed it quite nicely and I see that at mazda6club.com many have the same issue and I've perused a thread about mazda protege rust at edmunds. I do think Mazda has a problem here. In my case the rust on my MPV is mainly panels. The undercarriage looks ok--rusty for sure, but what car in the north isn't. Other than the exhaust which is heavily corroded at one particular space the rest of it looks ok. It's mainly just the doors and behind wheel weels that are rusting up.Plus, Mazda supposedly "fixed" their rust issues almost every year. This recall will not probably change anything and more issues will be found again. And again.

Woe is me, I have to use strength to steer..

Thankfully, by the Power of Grey Skull, you can probably manage it. Normal people, however, will be surprised by sudden power steering loss and may crash.
If you crash because your power steering went out then you have problems.
They don't rust THAT fast. Here is the engine bay of one fresh of the trailer from the factory.Heh... Shocking.
I've been telling people for years to avoid Mazdas because they corrode at a faster rate than any other car.. Here's more proof!
In the absence of hard data I am going to go on anecdotes and I've seen enough I think that at least for some models they have rust problems, just like the toyota tundra did for sure. I think some mazdas do.It's funny...the two Mazda's my family has owned also had minor rust issues (mostly on the exterior finish). Both cars were Millenias. I hate to think that Mazda has a chronic problem with rust as they are probably my favorite Japanese brand with their focus on sport. The Mazda 3 is definitely a hoot to drive in its segment.

Yeah...it would definitely be a red-flag to me when purchasing...but wouldn't keep me from buying a MX-5.
hahaha...as much as I am annoyed by my 3 at times, yeah, I would still buy an MX-5 in a heart beat.
