I'm suprised at the engine configuration as well, but not in a bad way. It's a nice bit of power, it's a Mazda so we don't have to worry about handling, and though I don't know the first thing about Mazda's AWD system, if it's good this should be a sweet, sweet ride.
I don't worry to much about the "rally wars" comments, unless spy shots start showing funky body kits and monstrous whale tails. Frankly, in that white, with just the subtlest hint of intercooler gleam behind the black grill, this car looks like a wolf in sheep's clothing and that's fine by me.

I wish they weren't marketing it at the WRX/EVO market though, do we really need another?
I was hoping for a mildly blown 6 cyl until I read the article.

That's what I was thinking, too. The turbo'd 6-cyl would have made for a great car, with a great sound.
Still, that much torque and hp from a 4-cyl is impressive. I bet the base config will be around $28K, though.

Didn't expect that out of a Mazda. I don't see really how a 6 is meant to compete against a STi or an Evo though - TT and AWD doesn't automatically put it in that category. The suspension setup and everything probably won't even be geared towards that purpose anyway.

It's to combat turbo lag.
One small, light turbo that spools very quickly at relatively low RPM, & one larger, heavier turbo to take over before the small one explodes.

I would also think that the turbo-4 would weigh less as well. Regardless, who cares what the engine is. The numbers are impressive.
