Mazda Overrates Horsepower on the RX-8

If you guys have been following the release of the RX8, you'd notice that a lot of the RX8s that have been dyno-ed have been bringing in low numbers, low as 180rwhp on a car that has 2500miles on it (so its already broken it).

Anyway, apparently Mazda is acknowledging the lack of power and giving two options to the owners: a) they will buy back the car b) they will get free maintaince for hte length of their warranty plus $500 cash bonus. [Link

Also, on Mazda's site [Link], they have reduced the power from 250hp to 238hp for the manual tranny models and the automatic is now down to 197hp.

You'd think they would have learnt from the Miata fiasco that occured a few years ago.

I hope it still does well, for Mazda's sake, and the sake of future sport cars.

Wow! On a rotary that's not a bad deal if you plan on keeping the car for a while.

Wow! On a rotary that's not a bad deal if you plan on keeping the car for a while.

It's only applicable during the lenght of hte factory warranty! Not lifetime free maintainace! <if I knew how to spell maintaince I would be smart and owning a RX8>

despite the low numbers-- i never really thought the RX8 was supposed to be a real powerhouse. All the reviews said that it was more of a touring car, rather than a sports car. So-- the poeple buying it were never really buying it for the speed in the first place. Or else they'd get a 350 or EVO.

Vette has been DEFINITELY overrated.


Friend of mine is redoing an 80s vette..that thing is SO underated. 2xxhp my ass...i think it is pussing 350 or something.

Both 2003+ accord motors (I4, V6) and the 2003+ corollas are moderately underrated.

Besides, domestics had their share of overratings. Something like the 2001 cobra was pretty overrated from the factory. The fiasco was bad enough that production was pretty much axed.
