CX7 gets 19 / 24 with 244 HP a 2.3 L I4

CX9 gets 18 / 24 with 263 HP a 3.5 L V6

what's the point of a 4 Cylinder if it isn't going to get better gas mileage than a V6?

i figure you put that V6 in the CX7 and it would get at least as good gas mileage as that I4 but with more HP.

What's the price difference? They have to give a reason for a person to buy the larger/more expensive model, in this case it's probably an engine that will be quieter and run at lower RPM's.

4cyl is turbo

I also wouldnt be surprised if the CX7 got closer to it's EPA fuel economy rating than the CX9, in actuality.

4 cyl also takes premium gas and likely has a much more peaky torque curve. That type of engine works great in a sporty sedan/coupe, but not in a family hauling SUV of it's weight.

Real displacement FTW.

I woudln't really call it a family hauling suv. Its like that small one from infiniti. More of like a raised wagon for mid-20's types with their first/second jobs.

ya, the CX9 is basically a redesigned rebadged Ford Edge. the CX7 is really a tall sporty 5 door hatch.

obviously different applications, but i test drove the CX7 and wasn't happy with the performance at all, it was fast but didn't feel fast.

i love the form factor tho, that's exactly the size and shape of car i want to buy right now.

I wonder how much power you could push on stock internals... swap in a gt 35r turbo, new ECU, and whatever else is needed, and you'd be pushing 350 hp :D

According to the new EPA ratings, which are supposed to be more accurate, the CX7 gets 17/22, and the CX9 gets 16/22. So they're still very close.

One possible reason for the 4 banger in the CX7 is that the V6 might not fit since it's smaller than the CX9.

cx7 is pretty big. it just seems to me in general, mazda puts smaller engines in their cars.
