Mazda CX-7 vs Toyota RAV4

Need to get something a bit more practical for work.

Need to be able to transport equipment/boxes fairly regular. Tired of stuffing it in my 99 M3.

I'm looking at these 2 models specifically.

Has anyone checked out both models? Any tips?

Rav4. The lower gas milage, requirement of premium, and added complexity of a turbo is a negative in a vehicle of this type.

Ahhh..

I couldn't find anywhere on Mazda's or Toyota's sites the gas requirement. The RAV4 runs on standard 87 octane? The Mazda requires 91?

I also feel the same way about having a V6 instead of a turbo 4.

Just browsing through some reviews, however, the RAV4 seems to have a bunch of horrible ones, while the Mazdas are all excellent, which is making me second guess myself.

Well, here's my review: Rav4 rocks.

What horrible reviews? Post 'em.

I've seen nothing but good reviews

I've seen good things about both...I think the Mazda has more cargo space but a weak rear seat whereas the RAV4 has better people hauling than cargo hauling capabilities. While both are new, I personally trust Toyota in a brand new model more than Mazda, and I'm a pretty happy Mazda owner.

Most of those negative reviews are pretty lame IMHO. "Rough ride" Compared to a Camry yeh it's going to be.

I GET CRAPPY MILAGE! It was rated at 23 in town and he was getting 19. A combination of hard driving, the use of AC and the thing not being broke in could cause that. Non issue IMHO.

The road noise is bad. Maybe. But compared to what?

I guess what I'm saying is that there isn't much that would scare me off.

I know the average is up there, but browse through some of the reviews.

Common sense would tell you that if the car has a 4.5 out of 5 rating after 118 reviews that the good FAR outweigh the bad.

If it doesn't then I need to go back to school 😀

Hopefully I'll have some time to check them out tomorrow.

Anything else I should consider in this category?

Basically, I'm looking for storage space without the inconveniences of a bigger SUV (harder to park, bad gas mileage, higher cost, etc...).

Ford Freestyle
Chrysler Pacifica
Honda Element
Chevy Equinox
Saturn Vue
Subaru WRX Wagon
Mazda 5
Nissan Xterra
Toyota FJ

All in the $18K - $25K range

ooh! honda element ROCKS.

I own an older Rav4 and love it. If I had that kinda money I would have obviously bought a Honda Element. But I'm a poor college student 😛

if you just want a car that can haul and gets good gas milage, the toyota matrix or scion xB fits the bill, or hell, even a focus station wagon will do the job.

I was thinking about the Honda Element, but I hate the looks, the gase mileage is poor compared to the RAV4, and it's very low power compared to the RAV4.

Is it's only advantage cargo space?

Good choice, I prefer CX-7, nice ride. THOUGH I would also check out a year old Nissan Murano which is around the same price as new CX-7 if you get the S series.

Normally I would be looking at cars a couple years old, but I may be leasing so I'm trying to keep only new cars on my list.

I just don't like the looks of the Matrix, etc....

Rav4 is nice but too small imo for transport of anything bulky unless you go for the redesigned new model.

For older midsize SUV, Mercury Mariner has a lot of space and is definitely worth a look.
