Mazda CX-5: Official EPA numbers...

It's just a jacked up mazda3, right? The AWD version is 25/31 🙁

I can't speak whether or not the chassis is an adaptation of the Mazda 3, but I believe this is a larger vehicle than that...basically an escape replacement.

The engine/transmission are directly related to the new ones that have been put in the updated Mazda 3, but more thoroughly implemented in this iteration (the next Mazda 3 will have a more thorough implementation of the various "SkyActiv" technologies as well).

Either way, if you compare this to other small CUV's (Tiguan, Escape, Equinox, RAV4, CR-V, etc.), this far and away the best option gas-mileage wise.

Meh, I like the exterior design but interior looks very dated, like it came off a 5 year old Sonata, and typical Mazda cheap black plastic all around, which was OK on my 17K Mazda3 in 2007, but not OK on a $25K CUV, IMO.
I'd wait for the 2013 Ford Escape with EcoBoost.

yes way better than most comparable offerings

The AWD version's fuel economy numbers (25/31) are dissappointing. My larger Outback is rated 22/29. And the upcoming Subaru XV Crosstrek will likely be rated just under the 27/36 figures of the new Impreza.

I will definitely look at the CX-5 when it comes out, but may wait a few months more for the XV.

It may not be impressive compared to the Subaru offerings that are just not now coming out, but it is still impressive compared to the rest of the field. Not to mention that the Mazda will have more power than the Crosstrek, is likely bigger inside (correct me if I'm wrong), and is much more likely to be more fun to drive if the reviews are to be believed. Also, I'd rather be driving a manual or old-school automatic than a CVT...I hate those. The new mazda automatic is supposed to be particularly good.

It is probably a tad bigger than the XV. I love the CVT in my Outback. I consider the traditional automatic in the CX-5 a negative.

I actually haven't driven any of the newer Subaru's with CVT's, so I can't really pass judgement on them...but I have hated every other CVT that I have driven (from Nissan to Audi). The smoothness of the H engines would likely make me more open to the idea.

I said I would never buy a new car again and with all the fuel efficiency gains it would be hard for me to buy used unless the gains disappear and MPG gets static. But i doubt that will happen anytime soon.
