So we finally went ahead and purchased a new car a couple of months back, a 2005 Mazda 6 Sport Wagon from a dealership in the closest big city to where I live (500 kilometers). The car itself is brilliant, everything we wanted, and much more.

However, when we bought the car we signed all the papers etc., and then they told us that there was only one key for the vehicle (that could be found), and that they would send along the second key when they located it at the dealership. One month goes by, and no key. I phone, and they admit they can't find it, and 'forgot' to call and tell us. We can' just get one cut either, because of some programming chip in the key.

If we had two keys, it would be a simple matter to program a third. Since we only have one, we must take the car into the dealership Monday to Friday 9 a.m.-1 p.m. to get the keys cut, and a call must be made to Mazda Canada to get some special code to do this. After some requests, we were granted that it would done without charge, and a 3rd key would be provided to attone for our inconvenience.

I have gone to the closest dealership (200 km), and the day I was there (with appointment), one of the techs was at a funeral, and the other had a death in the family and was away, so they couldn't squeeze me in to another tech's schedule. Thanks for the appointment then jokers.

Now I call the dealership 500km away, and although they're open for business, Mazda Canada won't be open. AAARGH. Just want 2 keys, is that too much to ask?

Lesson learned? Shop local.

Cliff's:

1. Bought new car, came with only 1 of 2 keys.
2. Mazda's draconian system to get another cut is hassling us.
3. I have learned to shop local I guess.

The 'local' dealership is 200 km away ... and they can do it, but only if they call Mazda Canada while my car is in the shop to get a special security code.

Honestly, the events sound like they are out of Mazda's hands. I think you're being difficult. Yes, they screwed up initially, but they're trying to make amends.

I hate the attitude consumers have, thinking every corporation should bend over backwards for them at the drop of a hat. Corporations, big or small, are made of people too.

Oh, hey now, I'm not being difficult. I don't expect Mazda to ship me a new vehicle, but the fact that they sold me the vehicle, had me sign the papers etc. before telling me about the key is what bothers me. Perhaps I should have checked this out before purchasing, but then again, should I also have ensured all the bolts were tightened, and that the transmission fluid was at a proper level?

I realize there has been some bad luck involved with timing, but why isn't there a way for me to call Mazda, get that special code, and get the work done on a weekend? This means a long drive, and missed work time to get it done? This is my hassle.

edit: spelling

They probably didn't realize the key was missing till after you signed all the papers. I doubt you would have changed your mind if they had said "Sorry, we can only find one key, we need you to come back to cut you a second one".

Mazda Corp is probably closed on the weekends.

Sorry for the trouble though, hope you enjoy your car.

How's he being difficult? He lives a months' drive from the dealership and they are the ones who screwed up in the first place. They should be not only giving him the keys but also covering him for gas related to this, at least. They are the ones who screwed up.

I do love the car ... compared to my other hunk of junk it floats.

That sucks. However, this sounds like a problem with the dealership, not Mazda corp itself.

Mazda USA is pretty good, I had to call them up once, and I loved the service I got from the CSR.

I'll concede it is mainly the dealership ... but the inability to access Mazda Canada's service in a timely fashion blows. :(
