My friend added some coolant to his car (05 mazda 6) but it went over the "High""Full" in the expansion tank.

His car is cold now, Is there some sort of relief valve in his car for the coolant? Or should he defiantly find a way to remove some fluid.

There is not much space above the "high" mark on the expansion tank so when he turns his car on it will probably get to the top.

He has no tubing or anything, (he is 40 miles away from me)

^ thanks for the reply

he filled it on his front drive way. which is inclined. when he moved it to a level area its now just above the low mark.

Looks like it's not a problem but ill add this anyway.

Only thing that would happen is you will might smell coolant or see a leak at the bottle for a day or two as it expands and forces it's way out the cap. This is by design, cap is only designed to hold about 16 lbs and will vent coolant if pressure exceeds that, which will happen if it's overfilled.

Is this thing leaking consistently or was this a one off. I vaguely remember the mazda 6 having some problem with the hose running from the overflow tank to the radiator.

It has nothing to do with the radiator cap. The expansion tank is where excess coolant goes when the engine gets hot and it expands and where the coolant system takes coolant from if it is low.

He received the car from a mazda dealer with no fluid at all in the reservoir. I urged him to tell them to fix it, as it was unacceptable for them to sell you a car like that, but I don't know what happened but 2 months later he finally bought some fluid.

I have no idea if its leaking or what. Hopefully he will fill it to a level to which he can monitor it.

His heat works and water temp is stable, so it seems no air is in the system, I think he is very lucky with that.

Probably has a overflow drain in the tank unless they got rid of that on newer cars. Both my cars expansion tanks do.

The cap is on the expansion tank/degas bottle. If it's overfilled it will vent out the cap when hot until it's the proper level. Most newer cars have done away with overflow tanks or overflow drain lines and have a 100% sealed cooling system with an expansion tank and pressure cap, and a "MAX level" indicator to provide for expansion. Excess coolant will simply bleed out the cap when under expansion pressure.
