Mazda 6 Oil Change Question

At what point should I change the oil to synthetic? Which synthetic should I use? The car is brand new and just passed 3000 miles today.

As long as it is a full synthetic and you don't take the car to a race track every weekend. Any syntehtic should be fine. Castrol Syntec, Pennzoil Platinum, Mobil 1, Royal Purple, etc.

is 5k oil changes really necessary for synthetic? or is it a "i have money to burn so i like to feel better" thing?

Is syn really needed? Do you live in a very cold or hot environment? I have a Mazda6 also but from what I've read, there is really no advantage for me to use synthetic oil.

Depending on how much he drives, the extended drain periods of synthetic can be advantageous. There are other small increases in fuel economy as well in most instances.

IMO, conventional oil is a good choice for most cars on the road today. Acceptable drain periods are ~5k miles. Although the added peace of mind and arguably performance of synthetic for a bit more $ is worth it for some people.

Currently I will put on approximately 2000-2500 miles per month.

I jsut changed my car to full synthetic at 100,000 miles and I don't have any leaks or anything. You should be fine.

More than likely you can go ~10k+ with a quality synthetic oil, it's best to get an oil analysis done if you want to push farther though.

I would normally change the break in oil early, but there's at least one mfr that says not to. I think it's Honda.

Yes, they want you to keep their "break-in" oil in the engine until the 1st regularly scheduled change. At least that's what my service department said.

I do 5k on regular oil in my truck and 8-10k on Syn oil in my CTS and Corvette.

Also do 8-10k on my sister in laws Audi with Syn.

Also juts use the cheapest name brand oil you can get. I have used juts abotu every Syn for the Corvette and the Caddy will get whatever is on-sale as well.

Just don;t use Fram oil filters.

I've had my mazda6 for about a year now and only use Mobil 1 and never had problems yet. (knocks on wood)

Its not that Mobil1 is bad its that it is no better then most other Syns on the market which are usually cheaper.
