Mazda 6, center console question

I recently purchased a 2008 Mazda 6 and I need access to the back of the stock stereo to install an iPod controller. How do I gain access to the center console?

Mine was a 2005. IIRC, you first had to remove the piece surrounding the hand brake, that exposed a couple of screws. Then you removed the ashtray/coin holder thing and that exposed another screw or two. Then you could remove the bottom piece, which exposed another couple of screws, and finally the top piece.

But it's been a while and my memory is fuzzy 🙂

I have a 2005. The interior has changed somewhat in the 2008 and it looks pretty different.
Not that it helps the OP, but for the 1st gen model, in addition to what you added above, you also have to open the glove box and remove a screw that holds the stereo on the left from inside that compartment.
