~27.5 mpg over the life of the car. 05 3s, stick. daily commute is just under 60 miles, about 75% highway. But during the school year, that sometimes is 50-60% highway with traffic.

I should add I'm nearing 47k miles

I have a 3s Manual. City I get 23-26 with many short 5-15 mile trips. Highway I get 30-34. Avg over life of car is 28 after 32k miles.

Unless you do a lot of stop and go on the hwy or something is wrong with your car, I'd say it is your driving style. There is very little difference in fuel consumption in modern automatics compared to a standard transmission.

I have an auto 3s hatch fully loaded. I average 19.5 whether I drive it hard or like a little old lady

It doesn't matter what I drive (2002 Accord, 1997 Tacoma. 2007 Mazda3) the gas where I live sucks for mileage. None of my cars have gotten what they "should" get no matter how easy I drive them.

i have a 2007 S sedan, manual, i get 30mpg, give or take a few in either direction depending on where im driving and how hard im driving. i usually drive pretty hard, and im never far below 30. as an example, my last tank averaged 29.1, with a mix of highway and city, and my usual aggressiveness and road rage :p

no, it is becoming a well known problem is 3's with autos. Go to the edmunds forums and you will see that lots of people are getting the same gas mileage I am. I got better gas mileage in my old Altima and tha car had problems.

Trip computer on my Speed3 GT says 25.6 mpg. I haven't actually run the numbers, but I keep track of mileage at every fillup, and 25ish does seem reasonable.

It seems that there are a small bunch of 3's (most autos though) that were made with some kind of problem or defect....

I envy you.

When I bought my S, I had a lower-paying job than the one I have now... I wasn't sure I wanted to cough up the extra dough for the Speed. So, of course, about 6 months after I bought the S, I got a new job. I would be able to easily afford a Speed at the pay rate I'm making now. Oh well, means I get to save more $$ for my next car. >.>

Did you guys enable the trip computer and monitor your mileage? IMO, if you have the current mileage indicator on all the time, you'll adjust your driving style to get better mileage. I now get 30+ mpg 50/50 with 5 speed manual 3s.

usually people learn from their mistakes and don't go buying another new, faster and more expensive car to total.

That depends on how it was totaled.

It was totalled by insurance company for flood damage. I've actually never had an accident (been licensed/driving 30 years).
Surprisingly my rates haven't increased and the speed 3 is only $9 more a month to insure than the 3s sedan.

They hold their value decently, you could probably trade-in without getting too terribly upside-down on it. The speed3 is a massive improvement over the somewhat anemic regular motors. Being slower than dodge neons and such is a degrading experience, and getting on steep freeway access ramps can be hairy.

Indeed, they do. I paid $19k for my 3s, insurance gave me $15,800. (Bought Dec of 04).
