Saw this on Fifth Gear, and thought it was quite an interesting little piece of kit. I bet they could sell these things here easily! Decent fuel economy, sharp handling, pretty roomy inside (they fit Britain's strongest man in the passenger seat!)

EDIT : I see that it IS on the way over here! Sweet :D

It probably has to do with the 74 and 83 HP motors.
On a side note, dash mounted shifters = *vomit*

A <100 hp petrol motor in such a light car should be fine for everyday city driving...0-60 in the 10 to 11 second range, which is OK for hauling around town.

Looks like a pretty fun car to drive around town judging from the 5th Gear Review.

The 1.5L diesel gets 63 MPG combined, which is well into Prius and Insight territory...it is slow though, getting to 60 in the time most cars can nearly finish the quarter mile in.

From your link
Mazda says its mini-crossover, the Mazda 2, will get 44 mpg with its 1.3-liter engine. A version is expected for the U.S. market, but first it will go on sale in Japan in the spring.

Also from the article, Mazda says it will roll out a 1.4 liter diesel version a few months after the initial rollout. This car intrigues me, looking forward to the US versions.

How the hell is that a crossover?

it's not, but everyone wants to drive a 'crossover' and there is no actual definition for 'crossover,' so marketing departments are calling everything they can a 'crossover.' just like how the first 'crossovers' were called 'SUVs.'

It shares a platform with the Ford Fiesta which is also coming to the US.

In this case "crossover" is just another name for a hatchback. It's no taller than the sedan and doesn't have the SUV style of other crossovers.
