"The WBO world championship committee is allowed no other alternative but to cease to recognize Mr. Floyd Mayweather Jr. as the WBO welterweight champion of the world and vacate his title for failing to comply with our WBO regulations of world championship contests," the WBO wrote Monday in its resolution.

It is against sanctioning organization rules for boxers to hold world titles in multiple weight classes. The WBC and WBA had been breaking their own rules by allowing Mayweather to hold their titles, but the WBO upheld its rules.

Typically, the WBO will allow a fighter 10 days to decide which weight class he wants to continue to hold the title in, if he wins one in another weight division. The WBO gave Mayweather major leeway -- two months.

Once the Friday deadline expired, the WBO sent the issue to its championship committee, which voted Monday afternoon to strip Mayweather of the belt for not complying with either request.

Why would he care.

Gives him a chance to say rematch and make another half a billion dollars in the future dancing around off anyone willing to pay for it.

Maybe less this time, he'll still make a shitload again I bet.

They were demanding he vacate 2 other of the other belts he holds PLUS pay them $200k

I'm not a boxer so I dunno here, but 2 > 1 seems logical to me.

I'm shocked they actually thought he might comply. Giving up 2 equal belts to keep one and having to give up all that cash is fucking retarded. They're smoking some good shit obviously.

He should challenge any member from the WBO to take it from him, in the ring.

Technicality that he knew about and doesn't care about, hence the non-response.

Wait... what? If you win the world championship in one weight class, then gain (or lose) weight and join another weight class which you ALSO win, you have to give the other one back? That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. I don't care for Mayweather, but I'm pretending it's some other guy to be unbiased. If the guy managed to win the world title twice, and required to change his weight to do it (and did so successfully) why the fuck would he have to give either of them back? He won them both fair and square... just because he couldn't compete in that weight class NOW doesn't take away what he did in the past.

No wonder nobody gives a shit about boxing anymore. That's just stupid

Well put. Petty bureaucratic rule that has no apparent relationship to rational thought.

If someone holds two titles do they have to fight again or retire in order to lose the title? If so wouldn't holding two titles at once kinda monopolize those two classes until a fight is agreed upon which could take some time?

If "Bob" wins the title at 145lb, then goes to win 155lb, then 165lb, he'll never have a chance to put the 145lb and 155lb title on the line since he'll be busy defending the 165lb title. I think it's the same as when a fighter gets hurt and can't defend his title any more, so it makes sense to strip him of it. What's the point of having a championship belt if it's never put on the line?

You have to constantly fight in that weight class to defend the title. Can't make weight at 145 if you're in the middle of defending your 225lb title. So on paper the rule makes sense. Fighters can just hold the belt hostage.
