Less than 100 miles from our border.

I'm sure you heard about this story, where 72 immigrants were found murdered in a mexican ranch about a week ago.

http://www.foxnews.com/world/2010/0...ts-dead-ranch-killed-zetas-drug-gang/#content

A few days ago, the leading investigator in the case went missing.

http://www.foxnews.com/world/2010/0...ants-killed-prosecutor-massacre-case-missing/

Then, when they are having a funeral for the victims of the massacre, bombs go off

http://www.aolnews.com/world/article/bombs-explode-as-mexico-mourns-massacred-migrants/19612386

This just in. The MAYOR of the city where all this took place has been assasinated.

http://www.foxnews.com/world/2010/08/29/mayor-violent-mexican-border-state-assassinated/

Is there even a real solution to stop this? Surely, with as succesful as the cartels are at smuggling drugs and people across the border, what's to stop them from bringing this violence to us?

The Republicans that sell weapons to Mexicans really don't give a shit. I know a Republican got to eat...but god damn. To have to sellout in so many critical ways has to be disheartening.

Legalize drugs. All of them. Sell them in controlled environments like drugstores to any adults who want them. If some people can use them recreationally without becoming addicts, more power to them. Treat addiction as an illness and not a crime.

Your mother should have stopped boozing it up while you were in utero. Shame on her.

failed state. This is a crystal clear message. Don't get in our way, you can't stop us, you won't stop us, anyone who tries will die. Next it will be their families too. The corruption runs too deep, there is nothing that can be done at this point.

Alcohol dopers get their fix legally and you don't see the crime. We all know alcohol users are worse than dope users yet it's the dopers fault? right.

Obviously Canada's gotta step up their game. If you think about it, it's not like Mexican drug gangs are going to start spilling over to Canada to wipe out their competition.

Thats because the two threads are the same thing. How do you think these gangs get their guns? Walmart?

As we speak Americans are making and selling guns to Mexicans. Its one thing for George H. Bush to sell Sadam biological weapons a ocean away. But equip criminals to neighbors in the south? Really?

I agree. However, I doubt that that's going to end the cartel problem. I don't think they will just put down their weapons and become peaceful law-abiding Mexican citizens all of the sudden. They'll find some way to extort money from the general populace. (The end of Prohibition didn't kill the Mafia.) Perhaps they'll follow the Sao Paulo model and start kidnapping members of wealthy families for ransom.

It won't end cartel violence, but it will mean the end of America financing that violence. And money is what the drug war is all about.

No we're not. The weapons they use don't come from the US.

I think Mexico should seriously consider bringing in at least a small, foreign force to act almost independently to be almost immune to problems caused by corruption and intelligence leaks. Not a UN force made of of troops from corrupt shithole countries though. The cartels run wild because they have too many eyes and friends everywhere.

More than 3,000 Mexican federal police fired, commissioner says
By the CNN Wire Staff
August 30, 2010 -- Updated 1525 GMT (2325 HKT)
Mexico City, Mexico (CNN) -- About 3,200 Mexican federal police have been fired since May for failing to do their work or being linked to corruption, Federal Police Commissioner Facundo Rosas said Monday.

Of those, 465 have been charged with crimes.

In addition, Rosas said at a news conference, another 1,020 officers face disciplinary proceedings for failing confidence exams.

The fired officers account for about 9 percent of the federal police force, which has about 34,500 officials.

3000 more troops for the cartels to recruit?

Hell, a huge portion of the popular weapons purchased in the US don't come from the US.

even if they were all coming from the USA and the USA got rid of all their guns, its not like the cartels would have difficulty procuring from elsewhere. The borders aren't exactly "tight" down there.

If you vacation in Mexico you are part of the problem. Dont give mexican resorts your money. It is probably owned by some mexican drug lord.

I agree with others that drugs should be legalized, sold to adults, and taxed. Drug addicts should be sent to treatment and not jail.

This would not abruptly end Mexican drug cartels but it would reduce their profitability substantially.

Solutions? War... genocide. It's not looking good.

Legalize drugs, cut off their money? Sounds good but you have to wonder what a starving beast will feast on next. Seems to me the cancer has already metastasized and removing the carcinogenic will not make it simply disappear.

I watch the developments south of our border and it reminds me of Iraq. It’s terrorism, guerrilla warfare taken to a whole new level. An effective level, where governments can no longer function.

Who is to say we are not next?

I'm gonna say human trafficking is much less profitable than drugs, so what other goose could they possibly find to lay the golden egg?
