Former South Korean President Gets 15 Years in Prison for Corruption

Lee Myung-bak, a former president of South Korea, was sentenced on Friday to 15 years in prison for bribery and embezzlement, becoming the second South Korean leader convicted in recent months in a crackdown on corruption.

Mr. Lee was president from 2008 to 2013. His successor, Park Geun-hye, who was impeached and ousted on charges of corruption and abuse of power, was sentenced to 25 years in prison by an appeals court in August.

In a nationally televised ruling on Friday, Mr. Lee was convicted of collecting bribes from various sources, including 6.1 billion won, or about $5.4 million, from Samsung, the county’s largest business conglomerate, when he was a presidential candidate and after he took office in 2008.

In return for the bribes, Mr. Lee did favors for Samsung executives, including granting a presidential pardon to Lee Kun-hee, the company’s chairman, who was convicted of embezzlement and tax evasion in 2009, Judge Chung Kae-seon said in her ruling at the Seoul Central District Court on Friday.

I'm not normally a fan of Korea, their factories have turned out too much junk, but dammit, this time they've done something worth copying...Do we dare hope to see something similar here in a couple of years?

Question is what kind of prison is he going into. Is he going to gang-banger prison or luxury resort prison. I have a feeling it is the latter which is meaningless.

yeah, that Barrack Hussein was such a crook...

In the eyes of Trump's supporters, yes, yes he was because FOX and Limbaugh told them so, yet Trump the President who "cannot ever tell a lie and can do no wrong" is anything but a crook because FOX and Limbaugh and every other talking head paid or promoted by The Heritage Foundation, the Koch's and Murdoch said so.

By now you'd think any sane person would've come to the conclusion that Trump is dirtier than dirt and worse still plainly incompetent for the job he now holds yet here we have this Twilight Zone moment in time where it's necessary for the Repubs to play this silly game of ignoring Trump's glaring and dangerous personality disorders in order to keep him spit shined atop that mountainous alter fashioned entirely out of elephant crap.

I love how racist conservatives insist on emphasizing Obama's "Hussein" middle name (even if in initial form) to imply that a non-white President isn't American.
He changed his name to that, what is the problem? Fairy Barry would have been better.

It's his middle name, and it's why racist conservatives are using it that matters. Why do you call Clinton "Bill" and not "William Jefferson Clinton" or "WJC?" Oh, that's right, because he's a white man with white names. You say "BHO" instead of "Barack" or "Obama" because you want to emphasize his middle name, to stress that he's a dark-skinned 'foreign' person. You really don't think I remember 2008, when people like you were shrieking about the "Hussein" part with the implication Obama was a terrorist?

If you're not racist, you leave the middle name out unless it's specifically called for. You're not his parent calling him out for leaving a mess, and you're not filling out a form on his behalf. He's Obama, or Barack if you want to get informal. He has nothing to be ashamed of with his middle name, but when you emphasize it, everyone here knows what you're doing.

You do know that HRC was also used quite a bit on this forum right?

It's a different context, and you know it. No one was running around shouting "Hillary RODHAM Clinton." Bama knows the connotations and chooses to emphasize the middle name regardless.

I'm not saying that many do use the middle as a way to link him to Muslims, I'm just saying your hard line stance is wrong.

When you can find examples of people on the Left and the Right doing the same thing, then maybe, just maybe, its not INHERENTLY racist. Maybe.

you mean for bill and bho? i hope so

If they are investigated and found guilty of corruption, by all means.

Put 'em in the same bucket as Trump if it makes everyone happy, and let Mueller or whoever sort it all out.

Holy motherless goat, how does the sentencing of a corrupt South Korean ex-President get diverted to racism so quickly. Can people stop being so one tracked about stuff? It's getting old and really making this forum complete shit.

You probably wont like this answer, but, generally when libs do it, its not to be racist, homophobic, ect. I cannot say the same for those on the Right. I wont say its a majority, but, its well big enough to be significant and far more than those on the Left.

When people try and do that, they get accused of concern trolling and or carrying water for racism by diverting attention away from racists.

I would say the closest thing would be the many people who emphasize that he's Jeffrey BEAUREGARD Sessions in an effort to tie him to Southern racism and secessionism.

Back on topic, does anyone know anything about the SK justice system? Are those real 15 and 25 prison terms or are they something like 12 months and 24 years off for good behavior? If they are real, congrats to SK-that's got to be about the harshest prison terms any modern country gives ex-leaders (outside of execution).

If only they could do something about Samsung. That corporation has been corrupt for decades and essentially owned the SK government, also for decades.
