Maybe we deserve to be ripped off by Bush's billionaires

Sanders's office came up with some interesting numbers here. If the Estate Tax were to be repealed completely, the estimated savings to just one family -- the Walton family, the heirs to the Wal-Mart fortune -- would be about $32.7 billion dollars over the next ten years.

The proposed reductions to Medicaid over the same time frame? $28 billion.

Or how about this: if the Estate Tax goes, the heirs to the Mars candy corporation -- some of the world's evilest scumbags, incidentally, routinely ripped by human rights organizations for trafficking in child labor to work cocoa farms in places like Cote D'Ivoire -- if the estate tax goes, those assholes will receive about $11.7 billion in tax breaks. That's more than three times the amount Bush wants to cut from the VA budget ($3.4 billion) over the same time period.

Some other notable estimate estate tax breaks, versus corresponding cuts:

* Cox family (Cox cable TV) receives $9.7 billion tax break while education would get $1.5 billion in cuts

* Nordstrom family (Nordstrom dept. stores) receives $826.5 million tax break while Community Service Block Grants would be eliminated, a $630 million cut

* Ernest Gallo family (****** wines) receives a $468.4 million cut while LIHEAP (heating oil to poor) would get a $420 million cut

And so on and so on. Sanders additionally pointed out that the family of former Exxon/Mobil CEO Lee Raymond, who received a $400 million retirement package, would receive about $164 million in tax breaks.

This article is about how stupid the average American must be, or at least how stupid the media outlets think they are, but it's also about how Bush is still trying to push through his tax cuts by other means, repealing the estate tax. A bad idea? You bet it is. Thank to GOD that the Democrats control Congress now, or you'd really get raped by Bush and his billionaires. Republicans, you benefit from this too, even though you don't appreciate it.

Yes, we do deserve every bit of this debacle.

Since the democrats are in control now, we can assume all of the above will be changed to your liking?

this relates more to your title then your topic, but yes it does seem to be an entertainment based driven society.
Personally if I see one more Brittney or anna Nichole story, I think i'll hurl.

I intend to make a sexy video with (or kill) Paris Hilton, so just try to ignore those headlines.

Of course. There is a high correlation of how much suffering goes into making a good and how good it tastes (look at veal and foie gras).

As for the attempt by the Bush Administration to cut the estate tax, it is all about helping out the ~13,000 (the top .1%) families that will be affected by this tax. The key to passing tax cuts for the rich is to make it look like the tax cuts will also help middle class families, when in reality, they'll get almost nothing from a tax cut, allowing the super rich to walk away with millions more in the bank every year.

So if they repeal the Estate Tax, this will not benefit you?

Another knee jerk reaction. Your worried about what OTHERS will save, and havent stopped to think that it will affect....*gasp*...YOU TOO!

But I agree. Its not FAIR that they have all that money and all the lazy people of ATOT and the rest of the country dont. Damn them to hell for thier own successes. We should steal it from them and share it among all of us shoudlnt we.

The Estate Tax affects all of us. What, not fair enough for you? Maybe we should only tax the rich, theres a winning situation.

I just read to today that R lawmakers in my state, FL, are trying to keep our new governors campaign promise of lowering property taxes by raising the state sales tax from 6% to 10%+, which would make it the highest in the country.

Gotta love how unfair that is, now poor people are going to have to subsidize beachfront property. Basically it screws all tourists(which drive a large portion of our state revenues) and people who don't own a home.

So it's happening at the state level too. I felt like I got kicked in the nuts reading that this morning, that's almost doubling the state sales tax. Property taxes are not a problem where I live, it's the coastal communities that are getting raped, but that's the nature of the beast IMHO. If you want to buy a 2 bedroom 1200 sq ft house on the beach for $600k, then be prepared to bend over, it's your problem not everyone else's.

I would support that even if I wasnt a home owner just on principle. Maybe not such a hefty hike in the sale tax, but I like the general idea.

And if I could keep running with it I would pass a law that states your unable to vote if you recieve government assistance. Just to give the poor a second kick in the nuts. 🙂

What the majority of people care about:
[*]News relating to: pop icons such as Anna Nicole Smith (that series has been canceled) / Britney Spears, young girls that go missing, teachers having affairs with teenage students
[*]Politicians stating Pro (or anti) views of the following: abortion, gay marriages
[*]What is going to be on Grey's Anatomy this week
[*]Living conditions that are equal to the person(s) next door or better
[*]Famous people saying controversial things relating to racism or sexism
[*]That $3.50 cup of coffee from StarBucks

Keep people occupied with the above and they could care less about what the government is doing.

Dear ideologue,

A typical Wal-Mart worker works a hell of a lot harder than a typical billionare member of the Walton family.

And the estate tax does not affect everyone, it affects about 1% to 2%, but it does benefit society as a whole.

You are clearly ignorant of the dangers of an excessive concentration of wealth, which is the enemy of the United States, as it has been an exception to mankind's norm, feudalism.

You can't have nearly all the wealth and power of a nation in the hands of a few people, and a democracy where the majority can challenge their dominance.

The US is on the road to the return to oligarchy over democracy. We'll see whether it continues. That depends on whether the citizens unite and fight it while they're able.

How does the Estate Tax only affect 1-2% of the population?

The problem is many Americans idea of "fixing themselves" is to flat out steal money from the rich and give it to themselves.

There's a shorter phrase for the same thing going back to the Romans: bread and circuses.

This is why democracy is fragile, and the real patriots are those who try to get the public to be good citizens, informed, to protect their democracy.

The wealthy can pay for propaganda to keep the public from uniting in their own interest.

By only applying to estates of a minimum size in the millions that affects 1% to 2%; and there's bi-partisan agreement to at least increase the minimum to affect fewer people.

The democrats want to increase the minimum and most republicans want to abolish the tax.

Dear ideologue,

That's nonsense. The wealthy get all kinds of government and public assistance. It's a question of degree not of theft. The price for a nice democracy is taxes.

Hmm, I thought R's didn't like to raise taxes. Also, we've had huge state government surpluses for the past few years which tells me taxes are too high as they are now.

So let's summarize:

1. You are actually a tax and spend Republican

2. You support voter disenfranchisement.

*Duly noted for future reference.

And if that last line was an attempted jab at me, sorry you are out of luck as I am a homeowner and don't support this.

And do the current proposed changes set a minimum, or do away with the tax altogether?

First off, how am I a tax and spend R? Ideally keep sales taax where it is and drop property taxes. But we know what that would do to the budget, and we know how quickly the other side would rally around the very call you are about how "rich whitey" is getting off without paying "his fair share".
So they compromise, and up it a little here to drop it there.

Voter disenfranchisement? Of course not. The original voter laws stated all land owners. We've changed it. I dont care if you own land or not. I simply feel if you are on government assistance you have no right to be casting a vote.

Nothing said thus far was meant as a jab at you. This is however.
Your a fool for not supporting en elimination of property tax. A brainwashed government zombie plodding through life happy as a song bird. Which is sad. See other posts about the "American public" and enjoy American Idol.
