maybe the Maxtor HD bashers are on to something

wow, had the same thing happen to me, but it was a 250gb diamond max 9 pata that i had hooked to a IDE-USB adapter. It went pop, pop, pop, that same chip started glowing bright red, then it started smoking like crazy.
 
Relax, that's the Mission Impossible destruct data option as mandated by Homeland Security. The new law requires a guaranteed data destruction method.
 
Despite the pics of the "scorched" platters, I don't believe flames. I can see that the chip got hot enough to melt itself straight through, but am I the only one that wonders if that drive was sandwiched between two other 7200 or 10k rpm drives with no airflow? I just cannot believe a single drive in a case with good airflow can get that hot without any reason.

Hell, maybe a tiny metal shaving of some kind got sucked in by a fan and shorted out the chip. Anything other then "IT JUST CAUGHT ON FIRE!!!111oneone"

Edit: guy's a case modder, hmmmm. This makes my second scenario even more likely.

Any engineer should know that safety limits should be so overspeced that this shouldn't happen even if airflow is poor. Granted there are some cases where user misuse could be blamed, but I really think from what I have heard about their drives running hot, that this is more a fault of improper design.
 
I have to accept it, although I find the same exact words in several articles in different places and pubs. It has not appeared in Snopes, so I assume it is a real event. Scary!
 
Hmm. That looks distinctly like the legendary ST 'Smooth' Hard drive motor controller chip that exploded a number of Seagate drives. I think Seagate ditched it for their latest models.

/me quickly checks his Seagate 7200.8 drive.

Balls. Looks like they only fixed it for the 7200.9 model.

 
Dang.... even if it didn't burst into flames, that's not good.

It looks like computer components have been getting the propencity to spontaneously combust recently...
 
The hell happened to the platters? Looks like the head tried to burrow itself in a few times to avoid the roasting chip.
 
A friend's maxtor 80GB drive did that. Except the cause was almost guaranteed the PSU as it killed the drive's PCB once, we replaced it so that we could get the data off onto another computer and it worked great. Put the drive back in that computer, hit the power and the thing sparked and caught fire. Mobo got deepfried as well. I tossed that PSU, some junky el-cheapo anyway.
 
It happened to me while I was building a new system. I always wondered if it was the hard drive or the seasonic PS. I replaced it with another maxtor and continued to use the same PS, no problems ever since.
