Maybe prob w/Intel 925XCV onboard sound...

Ever since I built this system back in January, I've had this weird problem: every once is a while I'll "lose" the onboard sound device. (I use it; I don't use an add-in sound card.) It's hard to predict when it will happen--but it usually gets "lost" after the system has been on for a few hours. Basically, a right-click on the "Volume" icon and "Adjust Audio Properties" says "No sound device".

The odd thing is, Device Manager says the sound device is still there, and working properly. I've been going back and forth w/Intel on ths for a couple months, trying BIOS recovery, unintalling just the "Realtek" portion of the driver and leaving the Windows "High Definition Audio Driver", and even going so far as to reformat and reinstall everything.

Intel said they had a newer version of the driver, just out, which the tech guy said should solve the problem. It worked for about a week, then in the last 3 days I've lost the sound device twice. Tho since the reformatting and new driver, it does get lost less than it did before.

When this happens, the system always hangs at shutdown. It can also hang on shutdown w/out the sound device getting lost, so I don't know if the two issues are related. I've run MEMTEST86+, for 3 passes, and it said no errors. The hang happens at the last WinXP shutdown blue screen (not a BSOD, the pretty bye-bye screen), at the final "Windows is shutting down..." message. At that point, I still see the mouse cursor and can move it around, but CTRL-ALT-DEL won't work.

One of the reasons I bought this mobo was for the onboard features like sound, LAN, USB/Firewire, etc., and not to clutter my system w/add-in cards. I don't do gaming or anything, just photo and video editing, in addition to regular busniness applications and web, so high-end media devices aren't necessary for me.

Does anyone else have this mobo, and use the onboard sound? If so, have you encountered this problem? (Which I realize may be 2 separate problems.)Thanks.

I'm getting exactly the same problem.
Installed latest BIOS, no change.
Uninstalled Intel Audio Studio, no change.

I thought it may have been a problem with my install but if someone else is having the same problem...

LMK if you find a solution, I (try) to keep this system up 24/7 because it's running MediaCenter but having to reboot every day after losing audio is a pain in the arse.

I have to hand it to ChiefValue, I'm on my 30th day and they're refunding my money.
Time to look for a 955 board...

My reformat didn't solve the problem, apparently. On the original install, I had the Intel Audio Studio installed (tho never used it, because it insisted on the system font being "normal" sized, and I use "large fonts"), but not on my reinstall. I also left off the Intel Application Accelerator from the second install, and the system actually seems faster w/out it. 😕

Also on the original install, I uninstalled the "Realtek" portion of the audio driver, which helped a bit, but didn't solve the problem. (I just left the MS UAA High-Def driver installed.) I'm about to try that again, as I don't really use or need the fancy interface that the Realtek driver provides.

The idea of yanking out the mobo and replacing it is not appetizing, but I probably won't upgrade the mobo for several more months, so I can either ask Intel to give me a warranty replacement, or limp along till the next upgrade. I don't like either choice.
