Maybe odd question... better bet: In dash car MP3/cd deck, or Ipod through cassette/FM adapter?

Hey all, I just picked up a 2000 Intrepid, and I'm loving it except for the fact it only has cassette/radio in it. Now, all of my CDs I have backed up to MP3s. I definitely want something that can play MP3s so that I can avoid cluttering my car with hundreds of cds, and for the convinience of how many fit on a disc.

Now, from what I've seen, a decent/low end mp3 deck costs around $300, and then I need to install it. While not a problem, it is a pain. On the other hand, if I were to get an Ipod or a Zen, I could avoid the install, have a portable player as well, but I'm not so sure of the sound quality compared to a deck, and I would lose the ability to randomly throw an unripped cd in and play it.

Which do you think the best deal will be? I'd also like the cheapest way if it works, as I'm a college student who just plunked down in cash to buy a decent car, so the funds are running out a bit😛

thanks!

Well, I'd likely go with the FM receiver for the Ipod, which I have heard works very, very nice actually

Eh, I have it.. It works ok but the sound quality is nowhere near as good as my new mp3/cd deck.. also, it's hard to find a good station to use in a major city...

Ok, next question: whats the best, AND cheapest MP3/CD deck that I can get??

Since I'm going to be spending 5 hours a day in a car, I might as well make it enjoyable.

well, of course people are gonna recommend alpine, i've heard good things about them. As for my own personal experience, i have a kenwood kdc-mp8017 (which they don't make anymore) but it's worked great. Also, my roommate has a JVC mp3 deck and it works great too, from what i've seen. He got his from ebay for about 150 shipped new, actually, so you dont necessarily have to spend $300 to get a good deck. If you haven't checked already, highwaymp3.com is a good resource for that kind of thing too.

hey... aiwa makes car decks that have auxilliary headphone jack (1/8") inputs right on the front. you could plug an ipod into one of those with no sound quality loss. hmm, not sure if u wanna buy an aiwa deck and an ipod tho... that'd be a little pricey. just my 2 cents.

ps... i have an fm transmitter and i don't like it at all... that's y i will prolly opt for the aiwa deck sometime. i wuv my ipod. 😀

i have a kenwood KDC-MPV7019 mp3cd player in my car i got a year ago for $200 (you might be able to find it for cheaper now). the only shortcomings for me is the lack of a rotary volume knob and no audible seeking in mp3s but both of those are minor points for me.

Better yet, buy a transmission cooler to stave off the inevitable failure of your transmission.

j/k (well, not really). I say get a CD player, but make sure it has an AUX input for your iPod 😛

Hehe... well, I've heard the transmission stories as well, but I bought the car from a chrysler mechanic, who swore to me that when the tranny fluids were changed they were done with the correct type and not the generic universal type... the overheating is caused when a less slippery (not sure the correct term 😛) fluid is used, causing excessive friction.
