Maybe It's Just Me, but FPS aren't doing it for me!

I have been told that I am a little strange, but I do not get the FPS genre. I mean, sure I can see why so many people like it, but I am not a big fan of the Rainbow Six(s), CS, America's Army, AVP2, HL, etc. I would love to be geeked up for HL2, but to me, it would just represent the next generation game for a genre that I am not a big fan of.

Again, I am not discounting the fact that tons of people (in these forums, no less) love/live for these games. I think I can pinpoint my lack of enthusiasm for this genre specific to the fact that I can't see the person I am! I find more enjoyment when I can see myself - aka Hitman 2, GTA 3, GTA Vice City, Max Payne, Splinter Cell, etc. Also, in the Console world, I have played SOCOM for PS2 and thoroughly enjoy that because, again, I can see the person I am. I would love to play HL2 when I can actually see Mr. Freeman! I would live to play Rouge Spear while seeing myself. What would be cool is if these FPS games could maybe add an option to disable FPS (no comments from the peanut gallery) mode.

Anyone else in the same boat?

I personally don't like FPS's very much for single player (although Medal of honor was interesting) .. i'm in it for the multiplayer competition

You cannot be nearly as competitive in a non-fps game. You lose the first person instant-reflexes. I like all games, but the ones that truly demand skill are always the first person games.

I think you lack a bit of imagination if you cannot fall into the role of the main character without being able to constantly see him. That is just my guess though.

Multiplayer FPS is where most of the fun is, I still play q3 mods online with friends almost nightly. HL was one of the few single player FPS games I actually played through, I'm hoping HL2 is just as good.

Well, some FPS do have a third person view option.
And I agree that it is cool to see yourself, your vehicle, whatever.
But it depends on the game. For games that include close combat, 3rd person is much better. But for anything that involves shooting, 1st person is better.
The quick and accurate aim that is required for a FPS is just not possible in a third person view.

But I feel like I get more immersed with first person view. Because I feel like I am actually that person. So instead of controlling a character from above, I am the character. I see what he would see from the perspective he would see it. It's more realistic for me.

If I walked around in real life from a 3rd person view I think door knobs and going wee-wee would present a huge problem.
