Maybe I'm just paranoid

I'm not a big fan of using the "Mother's maiden name" as a secret question. The only places I have ever had ask me for that are credit card companies, banks, etc. Are there other options that could be put in place, or could "Mother's Maiden name" at least not be the default. (I used the only other option, favorite pet, but I'd hate to see a problem for someone else who used it because it was the default)

Yeah, this is just for password retrieval, everyones password is hashed, noone can get your password. So, we have to ask you some question that only you could answer to reset your password if need be. No need for concern 🙂

Is the maiden name hashed? I think that's what he's really worried about.

I'd be worried about the fact that "mother's maiden name" should be a fairly easy piece of info to find on the Internet. For instance, if you know my last name and the state I'm in, well, my family line here the only one in the state with this name. The others in the country are on the other coast. Look up that, research, and I'm sure you'd find my mom's maiden name. So there, you effectively would have my password.
Now, favorite pet - the names of pets are less likely to be posted online.
