Maybe I shouldn't ask but what is the worst lemon you've ever heard of in a NEW import?

I don't really want to beat a dead horse's body after it's already been beaten with an import vs. domestic war here but do you have any examples from somebody you know or yourself who bought an import and the damn thing was a major lemon?

I'm sure it's happened and it's very rare. Personally I don't know anyone who's bought an import which turned out to be a lemon.

I know you veedub guys are gonna cut me up for this, but this guy in my aa club bought a new jetta, a nice clean silver. I make no apologies, I think VW cars are junk. But after seeing that nice beautiful silver jetta, I'm like maybe they aren't so bad.

But recently I noticed that he's been driving around a late model corolla instead. I found out that's because his vw is in the shop and he didn't even get the license plates yet, hahahaha. :Q Apparently, the car needs major engine work and he's trying to sell it now.

I was assuming import = Japanese and European.

So I take back my previous statement, older Hyundai's are lemons assembled with Elmer's glue.

My cousin has this old Subaru BRAT (quasi-pickup) that he was working on every time I saw him. I think it could go about 3 miles between tunings.

My father had a Renault that was a piece of junk from the start, he also had a Honda Accord that had constant electrical problems. My brother had a VW Gti that had a lot of problems never could get the radio to work after the first 4 months though the tapedeck still worked. The clutch wouldn't stop slipping and chattering, and the body moulding kept falling off. Also a friends mom bought a Hyundai the first year they came out and it was a catastrophe. 🙂

My roommate has a VW Jetta that is a total POS. It keeps burning out everything electrical in the car, the trunk has broken (could not be opened) repeatedly, doors have also jammed up. And the repair costs are insane. They never seem to fix the problem, yet they keep charging him to fix the same thing over and over (admittedly he's a bit of a sucker though, as he got baited-and-switched soooo bad at CompUSA once w/o even knowing it 😉 ).

wow...i always found audi to be a respectable auto company, but after reading that website, it really took me for a turn.

There are always lemons in all companies. You will find similar horror stories in the much "vaunted" reliable brands like Toyota and Honda too. Fair to say this guy seemed to have more problems than ordinary, but 1 such case doesn't mean all the products or all similar models are bad. For e.g. you think Toyota are quite reliable right, then did you read about the recent sludge problem stories in their engines? Did you know that a lot of Acura TLs and early model Accords had transmission problems? Usually unless you frequent resp auto-fan newsgroups, you may not even hear of many such myraid problems...

About VW, yes they are less reliable than comparable Japanese marque, but then just like the above posters gave their anedoctal story of some of their friends having problems, I can also give anedoctal stories of various VW running with no problems for 100K plus. It goes both ways...
