Maybe DIVX/XVID fall rumors aren't totally BS?

OK I will sound like a total noob, but what is this DVIX/XVId stuff all about? I know it's a format right?

They're mpeg4 codecs for video. Basically, the whole unrest about divx/xvid support in the media center extenders is that there currently is none (without using some sort of shoddy workaround).

Not supporting mpeg4 for video is almost like not supporting mp3 for music, as they've been the reigning champions of popularity for video compression for a long while now.

That isn't to say they haven't been surpassed in terms of quality and efficiency (h.264/vc-1, ogg/aac/wma/lossless), but their sheer popularity demands that they should be supported.

Excellent description, from that I imagine he might have the question of 'Why wouldn't they support it?' So I'd like to add that because of its popularity, an overwhelming amount of the pirated video material flying around on the internet is in the divx/xvid format.

It seems to be generally thought that the reason MS and some other media extenders don't support this particular format is that they don't want to piss off the content providers who happen to supply them with the product they sell in their video marketplace, along with dealings in other sectors.

Awesome. It would make no sense to add the new codec support to extender STB's and not the 360.

I certainly hope this comes to the 360 also. I get very tired of trying to fight a transcoding program or painfully re-encoding Divx files. It wouldn't make any sense for Microsoft to add this capability to Extender's but leave out their most popular media center extender, the 360.

guessing this wont include support for matroska containers? just waiting for that and AVC support above level 4.1.

5.1 AAC support would be nice too.

Heh, I think that would be very wishful thinking. I'm guessing avi container is going to be the most we get. I'm also not betting the farm on getting any 5.1 audio from a near-future update. 5.1 from WMV or mpeg2 is probably as good as it gets for a long time.

I guess we may get lucky if ac3 in an a .avi container is compatible with any update....only time would tell.

no good for me then, most of everything i have is mkv - AVC with AAC. no chance of me using wmv - audio or video. not taking 2 steps backwards just to get it to play on the 360.
