Maybe a Netburst rig isn't a bad idea... (advice, thoughts, etc?)

I was going to wait for Conroe to replace my aging 4.25 year old 1.9 Willamette, but the major price drop this week is making me think it might be a good idea to have a decent rig for the summer...

How does the following sound? (Note: no OCing)

In Stock 16550 $217.46 $217.46

(All prices are in $CAD, so to our friends south of border, don't have a heart attack)

And if anyone asks why a board with onboard graphics... that would be because it's significantly cheaper than the i945P equivalent. (Yay for Intel's bizarre price structure...)

Thoughts? And is DDR2 667 worth the extra $$$?

i had a whole bunch of comments relating to how much you were paying for whatnot, and then read the $CAD note, so only one survived

b) PC4200 is slower than DDR400 iirc, so DDR2 667 should be worth the money

edit: make that 2... last i heard OEM windows XP gets tied to the first motherboard its installed on, so if you're planning on making another move soon then you might be interested in a full retail.

PC4200 is DDR-533... in dual-channel, doesn't that work out to 1066MHz? Wouldn't that be enough to keep an 800MHz FSB Intel set up happy?

As for another "move soon", let me put it this way... this thing would be replacing a Willamette P4 with an i850/RDRAM board (which, presumably, is going to keep running with its existing XP OEM licence after I get the new rig). That should give you an idea of about how frequently I replace things... :) and when one upgrades that infrequently, unfortunately, no parts are recyclable in a new system (AGP cards, PATA HDs, whatever), so the old system can keep running with its existing licence.

With Pentiums you want and need as much bandwidth as possible, the performance hit would be notable.
