Maybe a bonehead question but....

Been running SETI since 1999 and while just playing around on my current main rig, I noticed an anomally. Running a Smithfield P4 D, 2.8g overclocked to 3.10 and WINXP SP3. BOINC 6.2.19 with the AKV8 SSE3 mods and all has been well. When I go into taskmanager it shows two process (dual core) bith they both run at 50%. Now that could mean they're each taking 50% of the TOTAL capacity of the box or something is annoying. I've checked all the config areas and I'm at use 100% of the proccessors 100%of the time so.....

I'm just curious really, but inquiring minds need to know.

on a dualcore full load means 50% per core, on a quadcore 25%, ... the 100% load is divided by the number of cores. Our computer is fine, it runs as expected!

That reminds me, (a different issue but SETI related😛), I've got an old XP2600 that's supposed to be running SETI for me, however last time I check it it was running Astropulse, how the hell did that happen? 😕 (only project set is SETI btw).

What is Astropulse?

Astropulse is a new type of SETI. It expands on the original SETI@home, but does not replace it. The original SETI@home searches for narrowband signals, as does a conventional AM or FM radio. Astropulse, on the other hand, listens for broader-band, short-time pulses.

If you're not running optimized applications, or haven't specified which application(s) to use, you can get work from all the applications SETI@home has. Currently, this is:

SETIathome_Enhanced
Astropulse
Astropulse_v5

All applications uses various methods then tries to detect SETI.

Astropulse_v5 is current astropulse-application, but released under a slightly different application-name to make sure old wu's isn't re-issued to new application, since the results is different and wouldn't validate.

You can use http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley...efs.php?subset=project to select which application(s) you want to get work from...

Oh, and interestingly, while there's an option of "Use CUDA" (in case you has CUDA-capable gpu), the latest added is an option of "Use CPU"...

Uhm, this is what becomes the result then normally only writes SETI. 😱

But when again, it's very common to be asked to type-in the PIN-number or PIN-code, and atleast around here most people talks about CD-plate (plate = disk)...

BTW, SETI can example stands for... hmm, oh, I've got it, Surviving Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence, or Still alive Extra-Terrestrial Intelligent beings... :beer:

I can't believe after all this time running seti we haven't found anything. It's amazing really. I know that it's a REALLY big task but... I'm kinda wondering if we'll find anything in the next 10-20 years.

Can't say I'm surprised, it's a tiny needle in a really, REALLY huge haystack 😉.

When I 1st started it 9 1/2yrs ago I reckoned on us finding something in 10-20 yrs, so I got about 10yrs yet before I get surprised 😉.

Still can't believe I've been doing it so long! :Q

this is likely to be a "failed" endeavor because the little green dudes are probably not sending off the kind of signals that we're looking for. However, it will almost certainly yield many unexpected benefits (like the whold DC craze, for example).
