Read John Muir or Tennyson or Whitman - all written in the 1800's. Their prose and poetry does not require you to be living in a shack on the wilderness 150 years ago to appreciate it.
Muir is the driving force behind today's entire environmental movement.
Yes, the woman lived an inconceivable life when she was young, and yes she overcame tremendous circumstances. She is to be given credit for becoming a prolific female black writer who inspired millions with her story.
But she was a horrible writer.
