Maya and openGL

So I need to create some models for a openGL application for a class. Since MAYA was free ... I chose that. Now I am a little confused ... I see absolutely no way to export a character and the keyframes I buld in Maya to any format which I can use in GL. Any ideas? ANy other (free) software which can do this natively?

Well ... it's more like I can't find examples on how to open any maya files in GL. I am a little confused abuot the file format as well ... I assumed that there would be a 'character' specific file format ... but I can only save "scenes" .... any links or articles that clarify this would be most appreciated.
