How do you answer this question if you don't want to arouse suspician to your boss that your searching for a job. I want to answer no but at the same time I don't want to make it look like my boss has beef with me and that is why I answered no.

No, I do not want to alert them to the fact that I am actively seeking new employment.

If you have nothing to hide except that you're looking for a new job then:

"Yes, but due to the sensitive nature of the job search process, I request that contacting is only done after a specific time period."

From my experience, no one contacted my previous work. All they did was contacting my reference who should be on your side anyway. Same applies to my gf.
