I feel for you, I know that has to suck having gone to college to get a good job, and now, you graduate, and you are lucky just to get a non-great job. Networking is key...try and get to know people who own and/or manage companies. Most of the time, even in bad economies, you can get in the short line for a job opening by who you know, not what you know.

The reason there was a spike in unemployment claims was because people are beginning to feel more optimistic about the economy and have started looking for jobs again.

I bet you wish you had something to support your claim.

Do you think that if somebody who has been unemployed and un-counted in the statistics for 3 years, goes out and applies for a couple jobs, he's suddenly counted again?

Seriously... is this a lol post?

Well I heard it on npr about a month ago. Could I cite the exact reference? No. Will I spend time hunting it down so that you can not believe anyhow? no.

NPR is a good news org and what jstorm says he's heard I've heard, read in a multitude of areas. That said, I think unemployment going up is a bad sign, regardless of how many new people are waking up in the morning going holy sh*t what a great day to look for a job and raising the rate, but the idea that the rate is negatively or positively impacted by people looking for work is beyond question.

google "unemployment rate 9.1 more looking for work"

First link: "More people entered the work force in May. But most of the new entrants couldn't find work. That pushed the unemployment rate up from 9.0 percent in April."

So, there you have it.

But no doubt, unemployment is a dark cloud. People are underemployed, making poor pay, and total employment level of the US has relatively plummeted in recent years.

More people looking for work doesn't mean more people think the economy is getting better. Where do people get this sh1t...

Yes actually, there's a direct correlation. Like how crime usually goes up during recessions or how Cheeto purchases rise on 4/20.

So it has nothing to do with it being summer, and people want to have money for summer. Or the 125 weeks of UE are running out, and people finally figure out they need jobs. Or college kids need work, so are back into the workforce...none of those things. The rise in UE has to be 'people' feeling more optimistic about the economy.

Haha, I love it. Who are these people? How much more optimistic do they feel? Optimistic about what? If what you say is true, then obviously, all these 'people' will have been asked these questions, and the answers shoudl readily be able to be provided. Surely, given how that'd be positive press for the Dem's, those will be collated and presented somewhere to trump up the more optimistic mood. I can't wait for the follow-up link(s)....

It s like the neocons WANT the economy to be bad. Pathetic.

I want people to accept Reality. And that Reality is it's going to take a sh1tload of additional sacrifice on the actual tax payers of this nation to dig us out of the massive hole we're in. And since there is zero way we'll be able to dig ourselves out of that hole without the Gov cutting its spending waaayyy back from where it is now, that maybe, just possibly, the Gov might want to do that before it asks these actual tax payers for even more $$$.

I keep hearing from Lib's how they want to raise taxes, raise taxes. And even as a fiscally conservative person, given our present - and more importantly future - situation, I'm grudgingly OK with that. What I'm not hearing from these Lib's is how we also need to massively cut back on what the Gov is spending. In fact, I see about zero plan for that at all. Nada. Zilch. $30-$40B is a joke.

At this point, even if they came back with, We want to cut $350B from the Defense budget, I'd see that as something positive, as at least it'd be a recognition that cuts have to be made.

Instead, it's 'Tax those evil rich people more, and lets SPEND!!!!!'

F that.

Meanwhile I think I'll head over to a brasserie for happy hour.

Here's what I have an idea about:

Debits = Credits
Don't spend more than you make.
A penny saved is a penny earned.

Here's what you have an idea about:

Take from one person and give to another.
Spend, Spend, Spend!!!!
Don't use the lube Dem, I like it rough!

I think we're done here...

Why would you be paying for me, I have a job? My mom, yep, you're paying for her. She's sitting at home collecting UE just like everyone else. Makes you feel good huh? Betcha you're wanting it to be bumped out to 140 weeks or some other insane number, amirite?

Oh is that the course overview for the economics class you took? no wonder you are confused.

I'm not really confused, I understand why we're in the hole we're in. What I'm confused on is anyone actually paying taxes feeling like they'd be OK with ponying up more w/o the Gov showing they can cut spending. Seriously, I know you're not that bright given your past postings here, but why would you ever want to give more $$$$ to the Gov absolutely knowing they're just going to spend it w/o doing any meaningful cuts? How F'ing batsh1t retarded insane would you have to be to believe that???

Then you claim "people" think the economy is improving...hahaha, maybe Dem's because they want to have a rosy view for O'Bummers re-election campaign. But I'm sure even they don't really think it's improving, who would?

Wow. You are actually willing to go to the mat and say that it's a good thing Obama lied to us because...we can't handle the truth?

Not at all. I suspect that they really didn't realize how bad it might get, and that *even if they did* they needed to shore up confidence by taking the optimistic projections rather than the the pessimistic ones. As we can deduce from the past, recession becomes depression when confidence is lost

I think the whole song and dance about "first cut spending, then we'll talk about taxes" is hogwash, simply because of the way Repub leaders deal with the world. If we cut spending, they'll declare victory & dig in their heels on taxes.

When was the last time Repubs allowed temporary top tier tax cuts to expire or top tier taxes to be raised when it was in their power to do otherwise? 1993?

And there we have the biggest fear of the right. That somehow the economy will get better without them fucking around with it. That somehow the church of trickle down will be forever proven false. Then where will you have your belief structure be? Of course the economy getting better would be the worst possible thing because a black guy might get reelected. The horrors!

Liberals look out at the world from a bunker of ideology.

The rest of us choose to deal with a world that demands to be viewed without an implicit ignorance of it's unpleasantries.

Most on this board should know that you can't argue with a liberal, their bunker of ideology is a dynamic defense unbound by reality or reason, you just have to deal with them.

Thats why 90% of the time the liberals are dropping facts on these people and the neocons are running away? Thread after thread you see the ideology of the right destroyed.
