For a new job that I may or may not except wedensday, it is going to require to do some traveling to oil rigs. My current van is not up for the task, and I may be in the hunt for a car.

I was looking at new cars, but I really dont feel like paying a huge car note and huge insurance. Would there be something that is:

A. Reliable
B. Gets good gas milage
C. Has AC

I dont care about anything else, I will put a stereo in myself. I can drive a manual, and dont need power steering. I was hoping to spend no more than 6k.

I have bad luck with cars, here is a list of cars from the first. BTW, I am 23:

1. 1985 Nissan Stanza Minivan (broke down, forgot what happened)
2. 1981 Dodge Omin (wrecked it and totaled it)
3. 1990 Ford Tempo (Car overheated ONCE, and I blew a head gasket)
4. 1980 Oldsmobile Cutlass (Same as what happened to #3)
5. 1989 Mazda MPV minvan (Temporary car, had many problems but never "died" on me)
6. 1990 Mitsubishi Mirage (Dont ask).
7. 1991 Mazda RX7 (Engine lost compression, cracked windshield big time, busted driver sid window).
8. 1989 Ford Aerostar Minivan ("Vantera" Amazingly still kicking, bought it for 500 dollars about 2 years ago and had minor problems).

Mazda Protege 5 hatchback.
Thats what I use for a daily driver and it works fine.

Its engine stays remarkably cool for all those trips through the Mojave Desert on my way to the whorehouses in NV.

Oh Oh.
OH NOOOO!
Did I just say that!?!?!
DAMN!

I wish there was a way to go and take back what I said. :|

Yeah, he should buy an Aston Martin.

What he SHOULD buy is a Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. Will eat up the highway miles in comfort, drop dead reliable, and you'll never get a ticket!

He said preferably under $6K.

My stock answer for such queries: Oldsmobile Intrigue :D You can get a 1998 model for around $6K.

Go foreign.

Ditto on the foreign.

You'll be spending more money than making it you get an American vehicle.

Go with the Domestics, you'll be able find a newer car, for around the 6K you stated.

Focus
Neon
Stratus
Taurus
GrandAm

Why domestic? A foreign car will last a lot longer with maintenance and get better gas mileage. That said I personally would get a civic.

Japanese or be on the side of the road.

I would get a used japanese car over a brand new Gm crap or Ford crap. If you go with a domestic your going to make up the difference in price FAST with gas mileage and parts breaking.

I spent more money on maintainance for my wife's Toyota than I have ever had on any of my GM cars...she's driving a Saturn now.

Then don't buy a 1984 with 190K miles on it. .;)

From my experience domestics have broken down more, and had a shorter life span than more foreign vehicles.
But you drive what you like.

It was a '99 with 50K in 2002. It was a total POS.
