May I register a complaint ...on reporting

A couple of years ago you could go to sites like Anandtech, HardOCP, TomsHardware etc and really hope to get some useful "advance" information on what was coming in the market. I get the impression that all these sites are now corporate (Not just Intel or AMD or Nvidia but all) lap dogs bound up by NDA's. Now mind you, I still appreciate all the articles and must say that they have gotten more professional and complete ... but what happened to the real "scoops" that I used to see.

Case in point - I've been looking for advance performance benchmarks on the Granite Bay chipset to be announced Monday and nobody has it. In fact - the only real tidbits (including the monday announcement) have come first from CNET and the Inquirer!! We know that working boards have been in labs for months now.

Is anyone out there still doing investigation on the edge (OTE) instead of by NDA and reporting real news instead of press conference fodder? If so I would like to know.

HARDOCP s a perfect case in point - HardOCP had them - and then they got yanked after a call from Corporate (ASUS in that case I think). They were already gone by the time I got there.

It's probably a catch 22 situation, if you want samples of the latest technology from the manufacturers so you can test and write about them then you must adhere to their NDA agreements. If not, then you don't get the free samples to test for articles.

Grumpy man I agree - but its pretty sad when CNET, ZDNET and PCWorld have info out before these smaller sites. I found these sites and started reading them when I got better early info from them. I'm not suggesting that anyone violate NDA's - that would be suicide. But how about a site that goes to Tech Conferences and Trade shows, networks with insiders, and refuses to sign NDA's - and puts out the occasional "scoop". I think there is a place and an audience for that kind of reporting - but I don't think you can do both.
