May be moving to new apt. 15000ft from phone CO... what DSL speed can I expect???

I'm currently about 4000ft. and I'm getting a nice 80k/s... How much am I gonna lose? After seeing this info, I don't wanna move!!!

It depends on many factors but the attenuation loss would probably mean that if you are presently getting 80kbs/sec then ... i'm guessing here ... you'll probably see somewhere around 60kbs/sec consistently ... maybe.

Who knows? You can either ask your provider to give you an estimate for speeds achieved for any subscribers in your potential building but I doubt they would give that info to you anyways.

I'm suffering through dialup right now but we're moving too ... but we're getting closer to the CO though lucky for us. I'm still weighing the differences between cable and DSL in my area. We'll see. The latest anecdotal report that I read claimed that cable, all things being equal, has more tweaking potential and is possibly consistently faster in downloading large files.

Need a little hope? I live about 15,000 feet away and download at 70k/s. I never see 80. Sometimes I get to 78. So who knows what you'll get.

well, it depends on your ISP, 15000ft is within the spec of 17500ft.. so you should be okay. and it depends on what's the cap of your DL speed as well.

It depends on a lot of factors, but to give you some more hope, I am (accoring to Pacbell) over 16500 feet from the CO, and I sync at 768kbps and get around 75KB/sec from most good download sites, and see above 80 on real great ones. I must have some good wiring.

trmiv: if you're top speed is at 768kb, then 75-80KB download speed is the maximum you can get out of the line, which is not bad...

I have cable, and if available, and you don't need to upload much stuff, I recommend it WAY over DSL. 80k/s is the low end of my download speeds. Sometimes I get 800k/s sustained on certain sites, and I usually get 150-350k/s. When I had DSL, I had nothing but problems. Plus, even with the relatively bad up speeds, they are still equal to what my DSL was (144IDSL), and far better than dialup.

it also depends on what gauge wire you have between you and the CO, im 13000ft and get the full 1.5mbps which gives my around 140kb/s on my downloads...the dsl installer was able to tell me my max speed with his little black box thingy he carries so once you get it you should be able ask what your max speed will be
