May 2006 - What are the top rated DVD burners now?

It used to be NEC/Pioneer and now BenQ has joined them, is that right?

Any new models that are expected out soon we should keep an eye out for?

What are the current models that stand out?

Idk, but as long as you stick to one of the known drives you should be fine.

I got a Nec 3540a and its great. I think most ppl on this forum have gotten that drive.

Get an NEC DVD burner. They're very reliable + you get excellent modified firmware by Liggy & Dee and support at the CDFreaks forums.

After some research, I found out that BenQ cought up with last year's NEC/Pioneer choices that were most talked about.

However, BenQ's latest model BenQ DW1670 has an inferior chipset to DW1650.

So:

BenQ DW1650 is 'better than' BenQ DW1670 and for my needs 'better than' Pioneer/NEC and all other models in this price range out now.

So it was a no brainer, ordered the DW1650 from newegg "to be delivered in 2 business days" to Kansas, no tax no rebates $33.99 + $4.89.

DW1655 (same as DW1650 just with LightScribe) is available for $9 more but only in black.

Plextor my friend. PLEXTOR. I have 2 PX760As and 2 more (listed in sig). AMAZING drives. I have never had a coaster from them in over 300 burns. However, a warning.... the slot load model is a bit noisy. The PX760 is a GREAT burner though, and the first to offer 18x DVD burning. To tell you the truth, my burning speed increased by around 35% when I got mine.

You can't go wrong with an nec, liteon/benq...I would get whatever is cheapest. UNLESS you are really picky about it like the people over at cdfreaks who suck every little bit out of their drives and have a collection of benqs and necs

Those people over at CDFreaks are always coming out with modified NEC firmware that adds more features and support for a wider variety of CDs / DVDs. I'd stick with an NEC drive. Plextor is not what they used to be and I wouldn't pay what they're asking for, for their drives.

It was available (retail version) for three times (!) the BenQ price.

Looking at the tests: is true that this Plextor still:
? Does not support DVD overburning
? Cannot read 90/99min audio discs
? Doesn't support Bitsetting change for DVD+RW

In comparison to the significantly cheaper BenQ, BenQ DW1650 appears to also have superior reading and error correction, is that right?

If so, while Plextor used to make great CD burners back in the day, they still did not surpass NEC/Pioneer when it comes to DVD burning and now, it appears BenQ as well.
