Maxwell question

So my computer is 3 years old, time to build a new one. Anyways, ill get straight to the point. I was debating on whether I should build now or push it off to some time in Q1 2015. I originally was reading that Maxwell 20nm would be coming out in Q1, then more recent stuff I read started saying that it got pushed to Q3, and now one site even said Nvidia may end up skipping 20nm and is just going straight to 16nm which wont hit till Q3 or Q4. Does anyone have a decent answer for me with what the deal is with the Maxwell 20nm tech.


My original plan was to SLI 980s if the 20nm were coming soon, and if the performance was worth it. But if they aren't, then im thinking I may just build the computer now, run two 970s and upgrade to Pascal in 2016.

Damn shame Pascal isnt coming out soon since that seems to be where the performance leap will take place.

We can all sit here and tell you the rumors we've heard, but the truth is, nobody here knows. With that said, here is my prediction...

GTX 960 in Q1 2015. This probably won't interest you.

GM200 on 28nm in Q2, possibly Q3 2015.

GPXXX on 16nm in 2016, maybe later in 2016 depending on how Maxwell holds up.

I think Nvidia will skip 20nm entirely.

Buy the 970s now, upgrade to GM200 if you feel the need.

No reason for GM200 to wait until Q2 or Q3 unless nvidia plans to build inventory for an entire year after tapeout just to coincide with AMDs 390X launch. That seems kinda pointless when Nvidia is going to charge $1000, above AMDs pricing structure anyway.

The only issue is whether nvidia is going with a better cooler to increase their clockrate on GM200 as the recent leaks show that the Titan II is likely 15% slower than the 390X at UHD resolution.
