Hi.
Ive been interested in this AMSET Utility for a while, but am reluctant to try it.
Does anyone know of any benchmarks comparing the performance, default and quiet settings in it?

I use it, it is a bit quieter in my experiences and I never noticed any speed reductions though atleast not noticable but I would bet that they are there. I figure just about any HDD benchmark would show the speed decrease. I have only tested with Sandra and it didn't change the scores.

i'm using maxtor 7200 ball bearing drive, after changing to /quiet, it is still noisy! I've no idea why, but did not notice any performance degradation or whatsover.

Disk transfer rates are unchanged. Disk access times increase from 13-14ms to 18-20ms for a 120GB Maxtor Plus 9 and 250GB MaxLine Plus II. There seems to be only two settings, because no matter what value I used for AAM (other than performance), it also resulted in the same level of disk access time degradation.

So it isnt any quieter? And the performance is near the same? Is that what you all are saying?

I didn't feel any noticable drop in performance switching to "quiet mode." However, the seek noise was reduced significantly. On performance mode, the seek noise was actually pretty loud; louder than any of the fans in my case. In quiet mode, the drive is barely audible.

Idle noise isn't changed by the acoustic management utility. It does, however, result in a noticeable drop in seek noise. So if you are annoyed by a constant, high-pitched whine from your drive -- then amset won't help. But if your primary concern is the crunching/grinding sound that you hear when accessing the disc, then definitely try amset.
