Maxtor, Western Dig, Seagate...Which is the BEST/ most RELIABLE HD ?

I always hear very good things about Seagate, and bad things about Maxtor. Many people on this forum and elsewhere report prematurely dead Maxtor drives.

Western Digital is good, the raptors are fast obviously, but I still go with Seagate for most of my drives.

I have Maxtor and Western Digital drives in several computers and I've never seen a hard drive fail in my 15 years of owning computers. They're all the same if you ask me.

I pick either Seagate or Samsung. Maxtor tends to be a loser IMO since they run so hot. If you have little or no airflow across the drive don't get maxtor.

Seagate is my number 1 pick, never had a problem with any of them. Never had any issues with WD drives either though. I've never had much luck with Maxtor drives. They die early, taking all my data with them. And as an added bonus I get to spend hours dealing with the moronic boobs that Maxtor hires for customer service.

Of course, Seagate just bought Maxtor, so I have no idea what will happen with their drives quality wise.

My vote would be for WD. I've used their hard drives for 15 years without any problems (but that makes me a little biased towards them I guess). If I weren't using WD, I'd go with Seagate.

This thread is a can of worms. It's like asking "Who makes the best motor oil?" on a car forum.

I have had good sucess with WD over years. I am sure someone here will tell me how bad WD drives are though.

I'd say that most people will base it on personal experience. In my personal experience, Western Digital has been the most reliable to me.

wow, i've only had maxtor and WD, and three of the five WD's i've owned have failed. granted, these were older (1 160GB, 2 40GB) drives, and all but the 160 were not actively being cooled. so i'm extremely leery of WD, even though they seem to have a pretty good rep everywhere else.

seagate has always had the best reputation otherwise, and my next drive will be one of the new perpendicular drives, probably just a 320 for now.
