Maxtor up for sale???

NEW YORK, Sept 28 (Reuters) - A major computer data-storage company is planning to bid $2.3 billion, or $20 a share, for rival data storage provider Maxtor Corp. MXTR, according to BusinessWeek's Inside Wall Street column on Thursday.

Hmmm a 'rival' what could that mean?

IBM wouldn't suprise me, but then again IBM made some of the parts for the WD expert drives when they first where release... my 2 WD 20.5GB 7200 Expert drives look identical and the test and specs put them the same as the IBM 20.5... hmm and I asked a WD rep about it, his comment was, well yes IBM did help design and develope some of the technology that went into these drives but I am not at liberty to say how much.... hmmm 99.99%?

I highly doubt that it's either Fujitsu or WD (of those two more likely Fujitsu then WD). More likely to be IBM or Quantum.

Remember folks Maxtor is a wholely owned subsituary of Hundai. When I found out I could not believe it either🙂

Sorry, but I don't agree with most of you.

Used:
4 IBM: 2 worked, 1 failed, 1 did not work properly
5 Maxtors: 5 worked perfectly

same here, all maxtor's i have owned have been great... can't say the same for ibm though.

Full of Maxtor haters, Im not going to say anything more, but they dont know sh1t about Maxtors, and Im happy that they're missing such great hard drives by Maxtors, its their loss.

I'd love to see Quantum get Maxtor, that tag team will be able to take over IBM's crown, crowned by so many blind people.

Maxtor doesen't have a very good reputation with the mom&pop shops I've talked with.. Based on defects, and RMAs, from the 2 local shops that I've talked with, IBM is most definately the undisputed king, in their minds. If it makes you feel any better, they rate Western Digital last. Maxtor is somewhere in the middle.

I tend to agree.

<<Maxtor doesen't have a very good reputation with the mom&pop shops I've talked with.. Based on defects, and RMAs, from the 2 local shops that I've talked with>>

Thats two, 2 local shops, enough to be a representative source? I didnt think so.

The high RMA rates, first, you'd have to keep in mind that Maxtors sell A LOT more hard drives through retail channels and such, and eventhough the number seem to be much larger, but the percentage might be just around the same. Second, they are widely avaiable at places like Fry's Electronics, BestBuy and CompUSA, so they are more likely to be bought and installed by a user that does not know wth they are doing, and therefore are more likely to cause a problem themselves which will later be a poor reflection on Maxtor.

Hey dude, I wasn't bashing Maxtor... I've used Maxtor drives before without any problems, and I have a Western Digital drive now.. I was just sharing what I've heard, Cause that's all I can do ...

Maxtor does have a nice quiet drive. But I don't think it's just because of "blindness" that IBM has the best rep in the HDD industry. There has to be some merit.

One thing I can say about Maxtor is their warranty service was top notch! Had a 3.5 gig drive quit a couple months before the 3 yr. warranty was up, called in for a RMA, call was picked up almost immediatly and 2 days later a replacement drive was at my door. Now that's service!

True, Im just pissed that people praise IBM so much and bash Maxtor like sh1t.

Maxtor service is great. It has to be! So many returns! Compaq service is top notch also because they have so much crap that needs to be serviced so often. All my servers (over 300) have IBM made drives. Very few failures. When I see a maxtor drive in a good server then MAYBE they would be good drives. Until then IBM rules.

Everybody assumes IBM ,but we should not jump the gun anyway wait & see what happens.
