maxtor ultra ATA 100 card problems

help:

I installed a maxtor ultra ATA100 card into my VA-503+ mobo. The mobo only goes up to UDMA/33.
So I why is my WD UDMA\66 drive slower on the card then on the mother board?

Also, if I connect my CDROM to the card Windows won't boot, but my Sony CDRW works ok connected to the card. Although the CDRW seems slower also.

Any ideas greatly appreciated.

do you have dma enabled?
correct drivers (i think that they are the promise drivers)?
is this a shared irq slot? (os?)
all that comes to mind off the top of my head.

Thanks foofoo. Things got better when I installed the latest driver from Maxtor. I might try Promise also. Also, the card was sharing an irq with the agp card. I switched so my sound card now shares the irq. DMA is not an option when a drive is plugged into the card. I think it automatically does DMA without the os getting involved. Anyway, the only issue left is that the CDROM causes a hang when connected to the card. So I will keep it on mobo.
