call up maxtor to rma a dying HD i bought 3 years ago. luckily i have a few more days till the warranty runs out. couldnt do it online because hd would crap out before their diagnostic tool would give me an error code...

the csr tells me that the drive isnt returnable because someone already filed an rma for that serial number bought hasnt sent it in yet. WTF?! i've had this drive the whole time. asked him if someone put in the wrong s/n by mistake and check the date (if rma is old, maybe they filed another one and left this be). he said it didnt matter as long as one was filed he would need a receipt to prove i got it from there.

doubt i still have the receipt from 3 yrs ago or staples has it either... arrrghhh...
so technically i can go to any store, get a list of hd s/n's and fill out rmas for all of them, effectively ending the returnability of the drive? (unless they have a receipt of course)

That sucks...

I just RMA'd a drive to Maxtor (internet advanced RMA). Everything went fine for me.

Just ask them for the existing RMA # and you'll send the drive in on that but be sure to send a replacement back to you! ;)
