Maxtor/quantum hard drives.

I bought a ffew 40Gb maxtor harddrive from newegg. I had to RMA one of them and looks like it was actually a quantum hard drive (that's what the online RMA status shows). Are quantum drives less reliable than original Maxtor drives? Then i will not buy a rebadged quantum drive again. Thanks

Actually, quantum is, IMO, a better HD. All my servers as well as my 14 HDs at home are Quantum and I never (yet) had a problem with them. maxtor aquired Quantum recently. On the flip-side, I have always had various problems with Maxtor drives. Go figure.

That is strange. This drive I am having problem is a quantum drive. I am sure it's some circuit probelm. It can't read from the drive but can write on it. It allowed me to do low level formatting.

I also agree that Quantum drives are/were better drives. With the exception of the BigFoot series, most of the Fireball line has done very well. I did get a bad batch of Quantum CR/CX drives though.

Everything. Video encoding, mp3s, games, paintshop. You name, I probably do it. Can never have too much storage. 🙂

Since you are doing video encoding I think it's worth asking you. I want to get some video in .AVI format. I record it straight from my VCR or satellite dish using the "composite in" on my video card (ATI RAGE FURY PRO with VIVO). But ATI software are not very good under XP. Can you suggest some software for video capture? Where can i download it? Is Mpeg better than AVI? What kind of compression you use? I mostly use Div x Mpeg 4 fast motion. are there other codecs better than that?

I am pretty sure you probably RMA'd a D740 drive?
if you did, you likely got a Fireball plus AS drive
they are the same drive, when Maxtor bought Quantum they started using the AS's I believe as D740's... they are all great drives.

It says RMA drive on order. Does this mean i have to wait for a while? I did advanced RMA with credit card. they said I would get it in 5 business days.

I don't know about current Quantum drives but their older drives were utter junk. I have never seen a Quantum drive >1GB that was working properly! Just yesterday I came across 2 more dead 2.5GB's. I've got at least 10 dead Quantums here. I don't trust them at all. That is why I don't buy Maxtor's anymore.
