I used to own one of the 36GB ones. Well, technically I still own it but it died. When I emailed a data recovery place they replied with: ah yes, we call that quantum sudden death syndrome. So it sounds like those drives have a reputation of dying suddenly. I ended up buying the replacement drive (an IBM with faster seek times for only 100 or so) from Hyper Micro though, so I can recommend the store.

Quantum sudden death only applies to their IDE drives. See the reliability survey for the TY series on storagereview.com.

They have 5 year warranties on them... yours is probably still under warranty.

A few of the IDE models have been notoriously poor (e.g. the "Bigfoot" line and some of the std. sized IDE models) and their rep has leaked onto all models.

I got mine today. It's a Quantum Atlas 10k2 OEM for Compaq (the firmware shows Cpq) drive. Popped it in - works GREAT. Fast and quiet. Now I've got 3 SCSI HDs and a SCSI burner on my puny 250W Sparkle - its exhaust air warmed up a bit with the new addition. :)

You would want one capable of LVD operation - U-80 or U-160. You would also need LVD cable and Active LVD terminator (if you don't have one, get LVD cable (obviously different from the normal flat cable) w/terminator from Centrix-Intl, high quality (made for HP servers) and cheap.
. If you find your card isn't up to it, the LSI U-160 is a good, low priced one. Buy it bare and get the cable above. Unf. you have to buy at least 5 pounds of stuff from C-I to get reasonable shipping costs. If you still have some older SCSI you want to run on there, make sure the card has an SE (Single Ended) stub chip.
. OTOH you could try to steal them on eBay. That's how I got mine - new-in-box Tekram card/cables/terminators for less than the cost of a good cable set. They usually have good LVD cables on there as well for cheap. Hyper Micro also carries the LSI line with or w/o cables if you aren't a pinch-penny like me.

Are these drives new oems? Also, any concern about the 1 year warranty? I would love to grab an IBM 15k drive....not sure of the reliability of drives with such a short warranty and unsure of how loud a 15k drive is....

Those IBM 15Ks they are selling are very hot and quite loud... that's why they are so cheap.
